Though it wasn't actually on the show, there was once that Ernie left for a little bit, in the book Ernie's Big Mess. It's been years since I actually read it, but I know he'd made a mess of their place, and Bert got mad and stormed out. Ernie packed and left while he was gone, I know he at least went and stayed at Big Bird's nest but found the sticks too hard. I think he also tried to go to Oscar's can but Oscar told him to scram, and I'm thinking there was one other place he went. Eventually Bert found him and told him to come home.

I nominate Bert as the (hypothetical) patron saint of inner-city tenants. *visualizes a haloed statue with a few pigeons at its base* Try to find one non-fictional person who takes in a friend like Ernie and DOESN'T go ballistic in a few weeks...

Well Oscar Madison was a person who took in and put up with Felix Unger for five years. But I guess he wouldn't qualify as a non-fictional person.

By the way, how many people have you known in your life that have the names of some of the classic SS muppets like Ernie, Bert, Grover, Kermit, Oscar, Guy, Harvey, Herbert, and Farley? We all know of people with these names, such as Ernie Kovacs, Bert Convy, Kermit Love, Grover Cleveland, Oscar Robertson, Farley Granger, etc. But how many, if any, have you happened to know personally? For me, I can think of several Ernies and Herbert's (who go by Herb). But that's it. Surprisingly, I can't think offhand of ever knowing an Oscar, Harvey, or Bert.
