Do any of you guys remember or were any of you watching Sesame Street when Elmo first joined the show in the fall of 1985? Back then he wasn't nearly as popular and not at all a problem yet. I remember he would pop up every so often, and he was new to the street and a young monster. He was often seen with Telly in those days. Telly was like the big brother to Elmo. It seemed as though before Elmo came along Telly was the main street monster and the cutest, and Elmo sort of took his place. But luckily he didn't push Telly out of the picture completley because the writers still had the running gag of Telly annoying Oscar and constanly trying to be his "best friend" Elmo seemed to be able to work well with just about any human or Muppet and believe it or not I was actually happy to see him when he came on back then. He looked slightly different in that his fur was a little more scraggly looking and his voice was more raspy and not quite as high pitched. Therefore he didn't seem as young back then. I'm not sure if he was labeled a 3 year old monster back then or not. But does anyone remember Elmo when he first came out and what were your opinions on him back then compared to now?

I do remember Elmo back in the old days and I agree he wasn't nearly as annoying as he is now. I watched Sesame Street through most of the 80's as a child and then through a large portion of the 90's as a babysitter and I'm still not sure how he evolved into what he is now. I remember when he was first on that I thought he was cute and often times funny. I do remember him being with Telly quite a bit, but not seeming quite so young. Then suddenly he just seemed to take over! Now I know there are probably plenty of Elmo supporters out there, but I feel that the show has become far too much about Elmo and less about some of the other Muppets. If they had kept him the way he was when he first was on, it wouldn't be so bad. Anyway, that's my thoughts on the subject. I try not to bad mouth Elmo too much, because one of my good friends really likes him!
