No matter how many times I watch the Ed Sullivan episode where the Muppets are a rock and roll group in a box, I can't quite understand how they did that. I mean, how many puppeteers were back there?

Probablly two puppeteers considering the song is lipsynched.

Well, yeah, but a couple of times, there were two hands in the front, three heads, a couple hands doing the guitars...I mean the table they were behind is only /so/ large, you know?

Yea. They might have been performed by three at one point because they were featured in "Muppets On Puppets" special from 1968.
