Scooter Soup, just do it. I've never heard of anything like that being stolen before. My suggestion? Ask them to put them on display behind plexiglass because you don't want them to be handled.

I also made 2 cheap little puppets for people to use when I go places so they can get into the puppetry thing and not be grabbing for my bigger, better puppets.

That's a good idea.

I never let (although they ask) little kids or even some adults (depends on the person) play with my puppets. One of my friends kid absolutely destroyed a rabbit I had made. For those library events, I normally have the kids make their own puppets, and, at the last one, had Don help one kid out. That was fun.

Yeah, I'll do that. Have a few "cheaper" puppets out for people to work with so my characters don't get ruined and get someone interested in it.
