My Dad says it hurts although I can't gage how much "hurts" is to him.
I have also heard that it depends on where you put it. Like if you were to get an arm band tattoo that went all the way around your arm(my uncle has done this)it would hurt a lot(and I mean a lot)when they do the underarm part, because there is a large nerve cluster there. So that means more nerves are saying "ouch" so you feel more pain. The same is true about the base of the neck and I believe the inside of your upper leg(hamstring I think it's called?). On the other hand if you were to get a tattoo on your breasts/pecs or your butt you would feel less pain, because those areas have less nerves running around. The point is, yes there will be some pain, but as long as you don't get a tattoo in the nerve cluster areas, the pain will be manageable.

My bud is one of the toughest guys I know, and when he got his tribal around his arm, he said it hurt like a *****.
I never got one because I'm too indecisive. I might like it today and hate it tomorrow.

Well, speaking for myself(having over 25 tattoos),yes permanent tattoos hurt. The easiest way to assess how much is,take your fingernail and scratch anyplace on your skin where you would want the tattoo to be.After you get to the part where that place you scratch is hurting, continue to scratch. That pain is basically how much nerve stimulation is at that area.Tattoos take from 20 minutes, sometimes hours to apply(depending on the size, detail and coloring).

Look at getting a tattoo also as a bad sunburn.Remember, tattoos are forever,so choose wisely.Talk to the parlor tattooist, about any questions you have.A good place will be willing to answer any questions without hesitation.See that the parlor as well as the tattooist are credited and licensed.Make sure that they autoclave(sterilize) all their equipment, they use gloves while tattooing, they use only equipment that has been opened right in front of you.Hope that helps somewhat with your question(s).Feel free to IM or PM me if you have anymore questions,I'll try to help you in anyway I know how.

Sterilizing is important. I once had a tattoo of a zebra riding a surf board that I got from a pack of gum. There was still sugar on it and I was bit by a mosquito, forcing me to scratch my wave cruisin' zebra. Sadly, his time has gone and he is no longer with us...

It is true, it depends where it is placed. Obviously the back would hurt because there are a lot of nerves and its sensitive. I have one on my arm up by my shoulder and i'll tell you one thing... it barely hurt at all. I was surprised. I mean, there were a couple tiny moments of pain which only lasted a few seconds, but besides that the feeling was more annoying than painful
