Does anyone find it odd that there was NO 40th anniversary TV special for the Show ?

Hey I'm not going to complain about no 40th anniversary special. Would it have been nice to have one? Sure, but so far this year for the anniversary we've gotten an AMAZING coffee table book, CD releases of some of the classic albums, various book signings around the country, etc. Besides after the last anniversary special they tried to do, I was terribly disappointed so I'd rather have them just put out some cool products than a sub par special that doesn't give the show the credit it so truly deserves.

I found the 40th anniversary stuff to be hit or miss. A great coffee table book (which I can't afford), a great DVD and CD set, crummy kiddy toys. I liked Fisher Price's plush, but overpriced remolds of old figures, and a lousy variety of them? Ball...dropped. I mean, sure, last time we were on the cusp of an action figure line which bankrupted 2 companies, but we still got the Gund Plush, a Chess set, and Pez (among other things). And we got 2 specials. This time, we didn't even get a direct to video deal. Sure, "Street We Live on" wasn't all that hot, but it was at least something. They didn't even air the first episode of this season in prime time like they were supposed to. There were a lot of great events (that you kinda need to live in new York for), and all this press that didn't involve faux news networks or half truths about characters exaggerated... but it really needed some sort of acknowledgment to people who just can't go out and buy these CD's and DVD's.

A simple actual special, either on DVD or TV, would have been greatly welcomed. Sure, that Elmo's Christmas Noisy whatever hurt any chances of another network special, but PBS could have at LEAST had some cast members sit down and talk about old skits and stuff like that. No. We got Wayne Dyer's bald head selling books.

I disagree, I'm very happy with the products they put out. I thought the book was definitely affordable ($40 something bucks off Amazon and probably can be found cheaper elsewhere) and worth every penny since it comes with the DVD of the first episode as well for those who may not have bought the Old School sets yet.

The books, DVD, and eventual CD set (I think it's because Koch folded or had some financial problems that caused the initial cancellation and delay) were the tops. But I really think this anniversary needed to have some nice collectible figurines, plush, you know... collectible merchandise for people who love to collect those sorts of things. The Fisher Price anniversary Plush were good (though I could never find them and have money at the same time)... the Count was the BEST Count plush I had ever seen (even better than the pricier Gund one)... but I think they dropped the ball when it came to the figurines. Old, remolded figures.... high price of 7 bucks a set for something that they once sold for 1 dollar a figure. And such a stingy selection of characters.

Again, we were burned twice when 2 companies went under just before they released the SS action figures. I was hoping to see something similar to that for the old school collectors. If not action figures, PVC's will do. Or at least obscure character plush. I mean, Gund gave us a Yip Yip! We've NEVER seen Yip Yip plush before, and there was only one obscure PVC in a set from the 90's that had a Yip Yip.

How cool would it have been if we had a Don Music or a Herry Monster Plush? That's what disappointed me. Though, again, the book and DVD sets are too cool.

Fair point. I guess I somehow missed the information about the plushes and figurines. Just as well as I would've been tempted to buy them and am rapidly running out of room for collectible stuff lately!
