Did SNL get good again while we weren't watching?

This thread stems from the fact that Rainn Wilson is hosting next week and that Arcade Fire is hosting.

With all the big names that left (or were fired) in the past few years, like Tina Fey and Jimmy Fallon and Horatio Sanz, many people thought the show would keep getting worse(r[er]). On the contrary, the quality in comedy sketches, hosts, and acts has been a ridiculous improvement over years past. We've had hosts like Jaime Pressly, John C. Reilly, Hugh Laurie, Alec Baldwin, Jake Gyllenhall, Jeremy Piven, and J.T. We've had music acts like Corinne Bailey Rae, Beck, Tenacious D, The Shins, and Lily Allen.

It's almost like someone with their finger within fifty yards of the pulse of pop culture was working for this program.

I honestly never enjoyed the Farrel/O'Teri years, not funny in my opinion. I enjoy SNL a lot more today.

That is a really good line up for next week. But the newby talent is doing a supeior job. Like Andy Sandberg, christen wig and Co. All these new guys that came at the same tome were all ver funny. While I don't miss sans ans fallon all that much, I do miss Rachel Dratch, and Tina Fay. By the way, I love her new show 30 Rock.

I actually loved the WIll Farrel, Sherry O'Teri Years. I though they were some of the funnist people who have ever been on the show.

When did Horatio Sanz and Cheri O'Teri leave? I thought they were still on the show. Anyways, I enjoy that show, especially now that Kenan Thompson is on there. I've always liked him, he seems like a good kid and he's a real good improver since his days of All That. SUPERDUDE!!!!!!!! I should watch next week, I'm a big fan of Rainn Wilson. DWIGHT IS MY HOMEBOY!!!!

I'll admit, this year's sketches have gotten better. Will Ferrell was the best thing to come out of SNL in many, many years. He may not be your type, but he's definitely the most famous. Aso, Cheri O'Teri, Chris Kattan, Ana Gasteyer, Tina Fey, Horatio Sanz, and even Jimmy Fallon are also terrific, all of them pretty much stemming from the same era, only some of them coming later and sticking around. Kristen Wiig is awesome; she's got some real talent, like Molly Shannon, with her Target Lady and the A-Hole sketch. Plus I'm really lovin' the Andy Samburg stuff. Kenan Thompson is probably the worst one, only doing black chicks and Bill Cosby (which is actually hilarious but he doesn't do it anymore). Bill Hader has somewhat of a Darrell Hammond-like promise, and as much as I loved Amy Pohler before, sometimes now she gets annoying, like the Nancy Grace thing. And the ONE THING I would love to see Hammond do is, when he does the Hardball sketches, take it back to where he was a loud jerk, making fun of everyone (my favorite is when he insulted Kattan's Paul Begala, whose kids my cousin has babysat for!!) Great hosts and/or episodes this year that have stuck out are:

Dane Cook / The Killers

Alec Baldwin / Christina Aguilera

Matthew Fox / Tenacious D

Annette Bening / Gwen Stefani, Akon

Justin Timberlake

Jake Gyllenhaal / The Shins

Jeremy Piven / AFI

Drew Barrymore / Lily Allen

This is actually the better half of this season so far. If you guys would like to see transcripts from some of this year's best, go to http://snltranscripts.jt.org/06/06d.phtml It's a really cool site... enjoy. Lookin foward to seeing Dwight K. Schrute on SNL this week! Speaking of The Office, J.J. Abrams is directing this week's episode.
