In 1994, I wrote to the Children's Elision Workshop (that's what it was called back then), asking if there was a way that I could view old episodes. Naturally, I got the stock answers of why they couldn't do that, what was already available and blah, blah, blah.

However, they also sent me an interesting Promotion and Publicity Resource Guide that included character descriptions. I came across it the other day while cleaning and remembered that it was kind of interesting.

Here are some descriptions of some of the more popular human characters who were around in 1994:

"Bob" Bob McGrath plays a music teacher who lives and works in the apartment above Hooper's Store. A music teacher from Indiana, Bob sings, plays the flute and piano and conducts the Sesame Street orchestra and band. He often finds himself the "victim" in many of the unusual and comical situations that occur on Sesame Street. Bob loves children and is good hearted, caring and warm.

"Gina" Alison Bartlett plays a teenager who works at Mr. Hooper's store. Gina is a good worker with boundless energy, brimming with youthful exuberance. Gina is very much a teenager; she enjoys rock music and worships her musical idol, Little Jerry (of Little Jerry and the Monotones). She also acts as a big sister to many of the younger Muppet characters on the show. Gina has a sister named Anna who graduated from high school in season 21.

"Gordon" Roscoe Orman portrays a strong male role model--caring and competent--who loves all sports and traditionally male things while at the same time being soft hearted, kind and gentle. He is a science teacher who lives in the brownstone at 123 Sesame Street with his wife Susan and son Miles. Bob is teaching Gordon how to play the flute. His soft heart is the way to his silliness.

"Linda" Linda Bove is hearing impaired. She usually communicates with the other characters by using sign language, but occasionally speaks. Linda's Muppet dog, Barkley, understands the sign for such commands as "sit and stay." While other people on Sesame Street have difficulty controlling Barkley, Linda is the only person he will obey completely. Linda works as a librarian in the Sesame Street library, and she has a close relationship with Bob. She is goodhearted, warm and friendly. Linda is often willing to do things that other adults might find childish.

"Luis" Emilio Delgado plays a dreamer who is ruled more by his heart than his practical considerations. He is partners with Maria in the Fix-It Shop. Luis married Maria in Season 19 and became a father on the show in season 20. He is of Mexican descent and speaks English and Spanish. Luis sings and plays the guitar. He is also an aspiring writer who is often in the middle of writing a children's book, adventure story, etc.

"Maria" Sonia Manzano plays Luis' wife and partner in the Fix-It Shop. Maria is married to Luis and gave birth to their daughter, Gabriela, in Season 20. They live in 123 Sesame Street brownstone. Maria is of Puerto Rican descent and speaks English and Spanish. Maria is pragmatic, often resisting things when they violate her sense of practical. But she is not rigid and can eventually be brought around to an opposing view.

"Susan" Loretta Long plays Susan who is a nurse. She drives a Volkswagen and is an amateur auto mechanic. Susan lives in 123 Sesame Street brownstone with her husband Gordon and their adopted son Miles. Susan is more reserved than some of the other adult characters and is more reluctant to participate in silly situations. She is happy, positive and practical.

I didn't say that they weren't on the show anymore. I said the CHARACTERS WHO WERE AROUND IN 1994. Whether they are still on the show or not, the fact is that THEY WERE AROUND IN 1994.

Also, by focusing on one small sentence I typed, I think you miss the point of this post. I thought it might be interesting to see how CTW officially described their characters in the 90's, regardless of whether they are still on the show or not.

Not trying to sound like I'M getting an attitude either, just trying to clarify.

It's just when you said "Here are some descriptions of some of the more popular human characters who were around in 1994" because most of these people are still popular on the show, but like you mentioned, the point of the thread was about the character dicriptions, which I didn't miss, I was just trying to point out what I thought was an inaccuracy. Sorry.
