Atsa right, at unbelievably short notice I'm being sent to LA for a few days of meetings.

BUT!

As compensation for only asking (aka twisting my arm, aka "we're desperate, please say yes") me yesterday, my company has offered to send me out early if I want a few days holiday while I'm there - on expenses, no less! Rock on...

I fly out tomorrow morning, should be in LA mid-afternoon, and the meetings don't start until...oooh...Tuesday :-D

So: what do people recommend I see/do/eat/drink/etc while I'm there? (And what should I avoid ;-)

Avoid freaky people (unless they're really nice) and homeless people--Cory is okay if you find him! (Just kiddin' Cor!)

Jim Henson Studios is down on LaBrea Ave down around there, and that's fun to see--especially the joint across the street!

And I think Crazy Chris and Frogboy live there, so maybe you all could hook up?

Otherwise, if you head toward Memphis, TN, any--Gimme a shout out!!

Being not too far from LA myself, here's what I recommend:

Check out Downtown Pasadena. That's a pretty cool place to go people watch and get some good food. And you get to walk down the sidewalks of Colorado Blvd. (Where the Rose Parade is held.)

Stay away from Watts and South Central. Not too much good there.

Downtown LA is interesting on a weekend if you want to check out the flower or garmet districts. Cheap wears and flowers. Of course, if you spend too much time down there, you'll need another suitcase to get home.

I would recommend Six Flags Magic Mountain if you like roller coasters, but over Labor Day weekend, I really don't recommend it. You'll get on two rides the whole time your there.

The pier at Santa Monica would be interesting. You probably should go to the beach sometime while your here. Just bring some sunscreen and mace.

Beware though, gas is at $2.00+ a gallon right now everywhere in Southern California (I do find it for $1.99 and 9/10 cents occasionally still.) So unless they are paying for the rental car and the gas, you may not want to go too far.

If they are, you're welcome to come check out my church on Sunday. First Baptist, Fontana.

Have fun down here. And it's warm (near 100 in the valleys, so probably in the 80's in LA... don't know what that is Celcius.)

Thanks for the suggestions! I don't know exactly what I'll get up to - I have family over there, so I'll be seeing them at the weekend, and also an old friend from Edinburgh who's at USC right now.

I won't be driving, but to me, $2 is cheap! Petrol costs anything up to £3.60 a gallon over here, sometimes more. (That's more than $5, most of which is tax.) I'll also avoid the beach, I think  I'm not into sunbathing, and the only form of sunscreen that works on me is a heavy jacket and pants...

The temperature sounds about right. We're just recovering from an unprecedented heatwave over here...the UK actually hit 100F a couple of weeks ago - that's the first time since records began over 150 years ago. Thankfully things have cooled off a lot since then  My studio was in the mid-70s for a few weeks, and with the humidity, it was just impossible to work in there. I also suspect the temperature is what led to one of my hard drives, a cooling caddy, and my DVD burner failing within a few weeks of each other :-(

I'm staying at the Sheraton up by the Universal lot (which is where our offices are, so I'll be visiting there, fer sure!) I have a vague recollection from the last time I was in California that there's a Legoland somewhere in the vicinity, too. The best bit is, this could well be a regular (maybe monthly) thing, and I have some holiday time to burn :-D I figure the company won't much care when or where I fly back so long as I pay my own way once the meetings are over, so I'll be aiming to take in some more of the US on future trips. America, you have been warned! >;-D

Be careful where you aim that thing! Still, if you want to plop down to Memphis a couple of days, you have a place to stay!

Well, I would take you with me if I could

The last time I flew, I had 125lb of excess baggage. In the end I had to leave her behind...
