What kind of fur material is used for Elmo and Cookie Monster?
What lenght of fur is needed 1"-2"?
Is it readily available at JoAnn fabrics or is it a special material that is hard to get?

In both cases I believe that the actual fur hasn't been available for years. Also, many of the furs you see used for television puppets are custom-made for the production, which is a very expensive process.

I have seen close aproximations of both in recent years. It's really hit and miss. You have to find out what stores in your area sell long fur and what they stock. There are also internet suppliers. This question comes up all the time, search the forum archives and you'll find lots of info and resources.

Thanks for the fur info..... That's what I was afraid of...
Why do they have to make it sooooo hard to replicate..?..

It's not hard to replicate at all? If you go to a really great fabric store, they will have the synthetic material you're looking for. I forgot what it's called, but it's real common. They don't make speacial materials for these kind of productions, it's not logical first of all, and it's not cost effective.
