Charachters who were phased out rather than written out

It's kind of unfortunate that some of these characters were fazed out of the show because some of these (Forgetful Jones) were great characters.

People have mentioned Forgetful Jones and Guy Smiley being phased out, but since their performers died, they weren't phased out, they stopped appearing altogether. Unless people mean their old skits being phased out, but then again, these days there are a lot of characters whose older skits don't appear very often. Of course, Forgetful Jones has occasionally appeared in non-speaking roles, and Guy Smiley has made a few speaking appearances.

A lot of Jerry Nelson's characters (besides The Count) have also been phased out recently, though some have come back at least once a season (and have also made recent homevideo appearances) in the last two years.

Actually, the only character I can think of who was written out in a definitive manner was Mr. Hooper. The others were all dropped without explanation, usually gradually.
