The irony is that in 1989, right after the 20th season, Bob McGrath was on a talk show, commenting on how much more advanced Sesame Street had become since its inception. He said that they've realized that children can understand more than the producers had originally believed. That was why they were taking on more topics like death, marriage, childbirth, and were planning to introduce the subject of divorce. He then discussed a scene where the characters were in the street, meditating, and reflected on how far the show's content had come. If only he had known that radical changes were underway which would make the show overly simplistic and completely undo all advances.

First of all, you'd need to define "we."

If the "we" you're talking about is people who watch the show but are not involved in its production, particularly adults...

...the answer is no.

I don't think Jim Henson's death has anything whatsoever to do with it, by the way. Jim Henson created the Muppets. He didn't write or produce "Sesame Street." (Individual segments, yes, but he was not responsible for the show as a whole, and I'm sure he was not involved in any decisions about curriculum, etc.) He was a contracted talent, just like any of the writers or performers who have worked on the show. Of course, it is certainly possible that (depending on who owned what rights to what at the time and what kind of contract he had) if he got really disgusted with the direction of the show, he could have curtailed his involvement with it altogether and maybe pulled the Muppets out too. And then that probably would have been that.

Remember, Henson's people are the ones who brought us Elmo!

Elmo himself was not a bad idea. It's what the producers have done with Elmo in the post-Henson era that has been over the top. I doubt if Henson's people said, "Let's create a new Muppet to take over the show."

Many times actors or performers, who are not officially involved with the production of a show, are able to give ideas that the producers listen to. Let's face it, without Henson's Muppets, CTW didn't have a show. I think that might have given Jim just a little leverage.

I think they must have given Jim some leverage. they do still have SS on at henson.com so they are not totaly seperate. but i think what gets me is there are shows for kids and there are shows for teens and then there are shows for us adults. Hardly any "famliy shows" the famly has been torn down and i would think that SS would be the perfect setteing for that. Still have the learning but yet make it more for all ages. that woul more then likely ton down Elmo to an extent. not get rid of him but ton him down and maybe make it where everyone could even get annoyed at him.
