Ok, don't ask me why I'm thinking about a Christmas special in July, but I've desperatly been trying to remember the lyrics to the song Rugby sings to Mew at the end of The Christmas Toy. I've found the lyrics that the entire group sings together, or maybe it was the version that was used in "Muppet Family Christmas", the one that goes:
Old friends, new friends
Home with the family
We'll be together at Christmas
Snowflakes, sleighbells
Bringing back memories
We'll be together at Christmas
Some things change with passing years
Let this feeling stay
Old friends, new friends
Hoping we'll always be
Here with each other together
On Christmas Day.

The version I'm looking for is different, it starts with "Old friends, dear friends, friends who have gone away" and ends with "first of all, most of all, I love you". Does anyone know the lyrics in the middle?

I remember both of those versions. I think the second one was a reprise after Mew was alive again.

I've looked on the net too, only found those lyrics you have in your post, sorry!

I know what you're talking about. Believe it or not my VHS copy is still good. I'll go back and listen to it and them post them

Thank you so much. At least now I know I'm not crazy and there really were two versions of the song!

The lyrics of the first version, when Rugby sings his sorrow to the frozen Mew goes:

Old friend, dear friend
Friend whose gone away
I want to tell you I love you
I wish you'd hear
Things I meant to say
I want to tell you I love you
Always you believed in me
But you never knew
Old friend, dear friend
So much I long to say
First of all, most of all
I love you
