As we know, Big Bird's nest area is covered by doors, and as we know, Big Bird was not created untill after the test pilots. However, in the skits with James Earl Jones counting and reciting the alphabet, James Earl Jones stands in front of Big Bird's doors. I have read that these segments were recorded for the test pilots. So I wonder... did Big Bird's doors originally have a different purpose, or were there originally just doors next to 123 Sesame Street for no apparant reason?

All I know is Big Bird went through four sets of doors through-out the years.

I think I once read something to the effect that such doors were once used as a fence around construction zones.

The more I think about it... that seems about right... when I think about it, I think I may have seen doors used like that before in real life, but didn't think anything about it.

You can still sometimes see those kinds of doors used for that purpose if you wander around the city a bit.

D'Snowth: When were the four times Big Bird's doors got replaced? I noticed the one in 2002 and then again just now (making them a little grungier like before), but when were the other times?

Well, don't forget from 1969 to 1993 the doors had that "grundy" look you mentioned before, then in 1993 they got "cleaned up" before replacing them completely in 2002.
