If this seems like something you'd like to consider, I'd suggest loooking at audacity software. It's not professional but it's free and it seems like I've seen quite a few amateaurs using it. At any rate it would give you something to play around with, without making the commitment of buying software.

Thank you, Gonzo's Hobbit. I'll see what I can do with this. I'm still trying to figure out the first steps of making an audio book.
