The closest thing I ever had to a pet was a beta fish my brother once had named Mr. Ed (after the horse). He lived for three years, which is apparently a long time for a beta.

To elaborate my first and second questions, back in 1962, there was a song entitled "The Night Has A Thousand Eyes," by a singer named Bobby Vee.
