Dying in the washing machine give you even coverage but it causes the fabric to "pill" up. I use to use the machine, but since have started "tub" dying and the results are much better.
I use one of those big plastic tubs with the rope handles ($7-$10) or a Rubbermaid under-bed container. Both work great as long as you've taken the time to disolve your dye and wet your fabric.
