Check this out everybody - Alien Alert!

I think this is the first puppetry video podcast (or vlog) that's come out. It features a puppet called Elian the Alien. I've been watching the site develop on blogger the past few weeks and now the first episode is live. This is great, I hope there's more episodes coming soon. The first episode is even formatted for your iPod.

...and I'm only slightly jealous because Felix Pyre got this up and running before the puppetry podcast I'm planning to launch soon!

I've had a director talking to me who suggested my Chimp TV project be made as an podcast. I am a bit of a dolt on the issue so I didn't/don't know much about it.

Buck, could you dumb it down for me (and probably a few others) and briefly explain what is entailed in a podcast? What exactly it is? How does it work?

Video podcasting or "vlogging" is pretty straight forward. Basically, it's no different than posting video to the web normally, except you add RSS enclosures so users can subscribe to your RSS feed and automatically download videos to an iPod (or other portable media player) or they can go to your website and watch them there.

That may sound complicated, but it's not really and there's lots of free tools and guides available to help you. Here's a list of a few good links:

If you want to get a video blog or podcast up and running for free there's a great tutorial over at Freevlog on how to get started - http://www.freevlog.org

Apple has a good guide to creating video content for the new iPod online at http://www.apple.com/quicktime/tutorials/videopodcasts.html

Rocketboom! (probably the web's most popular show) has a nice overview of their production process at http://www.rocketboom.com/extra/video_tools/ that's very helpful too.

If you want to get a sense of what other people are doing with video podcasts I recommend reading iPodGuide.tv regularly. They tend to highlight the best shows that are available out there.
