I think it might have worked well with puppets, there was always that bit in one of the ALF episodes where he had flashbacks back to his time on Melmac. It was funny. Doing it as a cartoon meant they could get it on air while the sitcom was still finishing and also do a show without all the production difficulties of using puppets.

That's true! I always used to get confused about why his mane was Gordon on the cartoon instead of ALF like it was on the live action show.

well I saw my first ep. Of Alf it's like any family tv show just with an alien, i don't like it all that much it's has it's funney jokes and family moments. Maybe some of the other eps. are better I'm going to see them latter. What season do you all think is the best? Or what eps.? Thanks for your answers.

ALF was the nickname Willie (sort of) gave him when he crash landed. It's basically an abbriviation of Alien Life Form. Gordon Shumway being his given name on his own home planet.

I really liked the cartoon series, and I like how it got deeper into the character and his planet. plus, I felt the outsourced Japanese animation was Beautiful (in ALFtales especially). We don't see anything like that that much anymore. Just hacky stuff from Korea (some studios are very good, though).

It's a shame that a live action ALF film about his alien home world, using all puppets, would have been too expensive to consider. If we got the imagry and ideas of the cartoon series in live action format, we'd have something.

There was a script written for this as far back in the late eighties, and even now they say they'd like to do it - of course there probably isn't the backing for it. Hard enough to get a Muppet movie together nowdays.

I also noticed on the cartoon, Alf was very well behaved with his Melmacian family. But with his Earth family, he was always eating all their food, breaking and destroying their stuff, and getting the Tanners in all sorts of trouble.

I have the script (i bought it from a private collection a long time ago - at great cost as well!) from the eighties draft. I hope to put it out there someday on the net if i can get the ok! I have quite a few ALF rareities amongst my stuff, though i dont have a lot of the main ALF merchandise produced. I think the best thing was the fuzzy plush phone!
