40 movies you (might) regret showing your kids

That's perfectly acceptable to. As long as I can hear the movie over conversations, I'm fine. I only had one problem with adults before, and that was during that Airbender movie, which I was kinda dragged to. Though, frankly, if I want to hear riffing during the film, I'd rather it be the Rifftrax guys or someone professional.

Now, back to the subject...

I'm kinda conflicted, but I do kinda agree with Toy Story 3. There's no denying it was a great film, but it was dark. Very very dark. I feel very sorry for any parents that bought their kids Lotso dolls before they took them to see the movie. I mean, the Prospector in the second one was kinda disturbed, but still just family friendly enough in his evil. Lotso is the sickest freak you'd find in a cartoon film outside of Japan. White slavery and uncaring of sentient toy life. Sweet dreams cuddling your Lotso, kids.

Yeah, I think they even said on the DVD commentary that the little negative feedback they got from people about this movie was the fact that Lotso never redeemed himself... I'd have to listen again, because I forget why they said they intentionally had Lotso be that way.

Of course, there's the HISHE version where he DOES redeem himself, only after Woody actually spells it out for him that dude, Daisy didn't replace him, her parents did, and they only did so BECAUSE she loved him so much.

I read about that Toy Story 3 ending a little. Let me get this straight, the creators saw that the audience was sympathizing with Lotso...so they made him even more evil? To show that he deserved what was coming to him? Um, no, lol. That's horrible. I would hope my children would find sympathy for even the most evil people. That is not something that needs to be fixed in editing.

I don't remember if that's exactly what happened, I just know that they made it a point that Lotso wouldn't redeem himself.

Yeah I can't go with that at all. What the audience felt was perfectly natural. Empathy even for the worst of us is essential to us being human. There was no need to try and quash that.

I'm not sure I ever want to see Toy Story 3. Frankly, growing up I had my fair share of cartoons/live action kids specials all about forgotten toys and I'm not ashamed to admit they probably traumatized me for life, lol. Not sure I want to go through that again.

Now I'm not saying children's shouldn't see it. I recommend cartoons that challenge children emotionally. I'm just saying I'm not sure I want to revisit that moment in adulthood. Maybe at some point.

Personally, I'm glad he didn't redeem himself. On the one hand, had he didn't, they would have ruined a brilliant call back to the second film. And secondly, it would have been completely too obvious and we would have seen it coming miles away. They even set it up just to subvert it. And the thing is, it's not so much about the writers not seeing good in the character, so much as it is the heroes seeing the good in the character and then being brutally betrayed by him.

That said, freaking film was extremely emotional. No wonder they followed it up with Cars 2. That movie did have pathos for Mater, but other than that, it was a breezy film where fun for little kids was the first thing in mind. And even then, someone dies in it.

Yes. For the halibut, I popped the DVD in with the commentary on, I haven't come across why Lotso didn't redeem himself, however, they do specifically say that they were setting up the audience, leading them to believe that he is going to push the emergency stop button to repay Woody and Buzz for saving his life.

It should be pointed out that Lotso's flunkeys weren't necessarily villains, they were more opportunists looking to gain some kind of position among Lotso's little pyramid at Sunnyside.

I totally understand the redemption thing has been done a million times. I get they wanted to do a switch up of sorts. That's not what bothers me so much. I just don't like the idea of making Lotso even worse just to justify the ending they'd originally written. There's nothing wrong with sympathizing with an evil character and you're not going to stop that just because you make him worse.

I'll just say this: I'm glad that when I saw the movie itself, that it turned out that Mr. Potato Head put his parts into a cucumber during that scene where he mutters, "You would not believe what I've been through tonight", because somehow from the trailers, I thought it was... um... a turd... because we know he spends time in a sandbox, and we had that Lincoln Logs joke, so... either way, I'm just glad it was a cucumber instead of a turd, because I thought that would be a cheap and unnecessary joke on Pixar's part.
