Yeah right now money is an issue because it's a lot of spec stuff early on. But I was just curious to see who was poking around NYC. We are in talks right now with some large companies and so in the future money wouldn't be an issue. I'll post specifics as soon as I have them-- just wanted to...
Hello everyone!
JD here-- I've been super busy lately and so I haven't been on the forums too often. In fact, the reason I've been gone is also one of the reasons I came here. I just started up a production company here in New York and we are working on a lot of projects. It is me and 25 of...
Hey! It looks like you were using an iteration of the eye blink mechanism that I had posted a while back and that ended up on PuppetBuilding! Great to see the video! Nice job, very well done. Let me know what you think about it? Do you mind if I post your video on my blog to show people the mech...
It won't let me edit the first post, but anyways, here is the link to the page with the pictures and not just a general link!

Happy Sunday!
Hey Everyone,
I just posted some older puppets of mine on my blog that I realized I never put on the internet. Despite being a bit older, let me know what you think!

Hope everyone had a deal-filled black Friday!
Even if you aren't a dummy, sock puppets can be awesome. Check out Marty (one of the members of the puppet-band Uncle Monsterface) and his work...he takes the simple idea of sock puppets and really puts a neat spin on them. It's just fun to see that there is always a new spin to be put on old...
I have a colleague who builds camera-rigs constantly, and you would be surprised what a $50 trip to home depot can make. So, while I do think risers are your best bet for a low cost option, I would sketch out the ideal rig you would want and see if you can find the parts at a hardware shop. What...
In terms of feet/legs, I have gotten good results for a more fanciful looks by filling stockings with stuffing material...it makes it pretty easy to shape and the connection is as simple as a little sewing. If you don't like that look, I would suggest just starting out with thick tubes and hand...
This may sound less awesome than you had invisioned, but I was thinking...why not build a regular steadi-cam (i have tried most of the hand-made ones on line and they all work prett decently) and then just build a 3 or 4 foot platform for your camera op to walk on? While Jib arms are cool, they...
(Blink, thanks for the heads up, I think I fixed it!)
I dont know how this slipped me, but Peter Jackson's puppet movie "Meet the Feebles" has a lot of action in it. It is an extremely inappropriate movie for some audiences but it has some nice puppets and a lot of action.
here is a sample...
Unfortunately, a higher heighted steadi-cam rig is going to be tough. The general idea behind steadi-cams is that they move the force of movement below the anchor point and center of balance that if usually just at your hand. While there aren't going to be any nice plans laid out for you on the...
Look at pretty much any monster-based horror movie from the 80s...unless the monster is big enough to have a human inside, they are usually just puppets. Alien, for example, is mainly large manually controlled puppets (although a lot of the famous shots are huge animatronic rigs).
Check out my blog for further contact info, but I am an NYU film student and puppetbuilder/performer. I would love to hear about your project. Shoot me an email if you are intereted.
Humans by figure standards (based on Andrew Loomis' figure styles...if you are interested in drawing or even just character design...check out anything by Andrew Loomis...he was one of the best instructional authors for artists) have the center of their eyes slightly inside the two horizontal...
It will be a fun project to start working with marionettes...they are VERY different than hand/rod puppets. I would be interested to hear what you have to say about your particular puppet and how easy it is to use. If you need any help getting her back in shape, let us know!
I just posted a simple eye-blink post in my blog (which I posted in the forums yesterday) which may spark some ideas for the eye-blink. In terms of ear movement...are we talking wiggling? bending? twitching? Regardless I am certain that this is absolutely possible without crowding your head...
I appreciate your kind words. Let me know more about the kind of stuff you would be interested in learning more about. I can certainly cater to specific needs. I have just started this (as you can tell by the number of posts) and will try to update the blog frequently so certainly let me know if...
