I have to say... the only new Sesame Characters I really cannot stand are Elisibeth (otr whatever her name is), her Cat, Little Murray Sparkles, and the Monster Clubhouse chracters. But they seem to be waining!

Actually, Telly was fairly popular in the 80's.... I think he's so popular because Martin P Robinson (FOMP!) does a great job with him... Plus, since there are fewer episodes, it's hard to use episodes about Oscar and the rest.
