I actually own a Bob Brown nun puppet.
A few years ago I directed a production on Nunsense. I told the producers that I needed to buy a good puppet for the "Sister Mary Annette" sequence. They choked and asked why I couldn't just make a puppet out of a sock. Clearly they didn't understand, so...
For smaller "explosions" use can also use compressed air and common baking flour. (Less is more) Used in conjuntion with the afore-mentioned flashes, debris, etc. it works well...and is only slightly less unpleasant to breathe than CO2. (But considerably messier)
Snark-
Actually the green foam is a higher quality than the white/beige foam that one usually sees. I use it a lot myself. In fact, Garth 2.0 (my avatar) is made of 1" foam for the body and 1/2" for the head. Since I never use exposed foam, I'm not concerned with any "sheen" issues.
I have...
Steve, that is simply fantastic! You are such a great artist! First of all, your character designs are just incredible and they translate really well to 3D.
I really love how even with a very little movement of the eyelids, the expression changes profoundly.
Well done!
I agree, Buck. I often perform my puppets at my church, but NEVER at children’s church. I usually will be doing some sort of banter with the Pastor, and I am standing to the front or side of the main platform holding the puppet up above me. I am not the primary focus, but I am not hidden at all...
Usually the only time I perform multiple puppets simultaneously is for background/crowd scenes. Then I don't have to worry about arm rods and the like. Particularly for musical numbers I really try to avoid having the two perform in perfect unison. I usually delay the lip sync of my left hand by...
Oh, WOW!!! This is easily as fine a puppetry performance as I have ever seen! I would have to put this in the same echelon as Henson and Tillstrom.
BRAVO!!!
Thanks for posting the link!
I have never apologized for not letting people man-handle my puppets. Only other, established puppeteers are allowed free access to them. I also do not feel obliged to volunteer a reason for not letting them. If asked I will respond that puppets are tools, not toys, and these are very delicate...
Mike-
Thank you so much for your generosity, not only in this, but in all the information you have shared and continue to share with us!
Merry Christmas, my friend!

Fozzie-
Somewhere I have a video of that same sequence, although I do not have a video of Of Muppets and Men. I think I have a still image of it somewhere too and I remember upon closer inspection that they simply used common scissor-style kitchen tongs fastened to the arm rods to allow the...
Hmmm... hard to say. It sounds similar to my Garth puppet though. His arm rods are pretty flexible, and they are long enough to reach above his head. If I hold both handles in one hand and extend his hands above his head, they are both branching out from essentially a single location, even...
I partucularly like this quote from the item's description.
... I am pretty sure this is Oscar but sure but if not then a good replica.
I can't even figure out any reasoning to make such a statement! I mean what would a bad replica look like??????
The real Yoda puppets had no antron fleece. You'll notice that the ebay one is rather fuzzy, which of course the original was not. Also the mouth is way too wide on the ebay one.... I would be more inclined to cal it Yodish...
The Arms Length technique is the one that I have adopted. It does use velcro (this is the correct spelling) at the back of the neck / inside of body and also uses a flexible ring sewn into the bottom of the sleeve. In fact Garth (in my avatar) has only this ring, no velcro and he is very secure...
Kevin, what did they have you lip sync to? For us it was some pimp-funk thing I had never heard before...and how exactly is one supposed to sync to a rhythm that one has never heard before?
When I teach puppetry seminars, the FIRST and MOST IMPORTANT things I teach are eye contact and lip sync...
There have been about a million or so threads on arm rods, in theory and in practice. If I were you I would do a search here at the forum to find and read them.
I've read everything from coat hangers to welding rods to insulation support wire and more, all here in the forum.
Also some folks...
I use sign vinyl. It is only 2 mil thick and self adhesive. I used to work in a sign shop so it was extremely easy for me to plot cirlces of various sizes. I made some in 3/8", 1/2", 5/8" and 3/4" so I've got plenty for different sized puppets/eyes.
if you were to go to a sign shop you would...
