    Why did Noggin cancel Unpaved?

Thanks, DT! All the more reason to really loathe Viacom. Seems like every time I hear that corporate name, it's in connection with a negative context; either they're underwriting more garbage from MTV or blacking out their channels on Dish Network or something like this.

    Psychedelic SS

The largest influence seemed to be in the animation style and themes (although there were some "classic rock" moments with the muppets, too). I was born in '73, so I don't know a lot about the roots of that '60s culture, but a lot of cartoons have that "Yellow Submarine" look to them, with...

    Why did Noggin cancel Unpaved?

I don't understand why Noggin phased out Sesame Street Unpaved broadcasts. I could care less how they alter the modern-day show as long as somebody continues to pay homage to the show of the same name in the 70s and 80s with the different format. In an age where there are cable channels...

    Memories of "Early Elmo"

I can remember when Elmo was around when I stopped watching in the early 80s. Elmo was in prime form back then as a supporting cast member. It was only when he was regularly thrust into lead roles that he became really annoying.

    Gordon Trauma

Roscoe Orman seems to embody the true spirit of Gordon. Hal Miller was awkward in the Unpaved episodes I have. He didn't have a lot of chemistry with Susan. Matt Robinson seemed dark and introverted, lacking Orman's natural exuberance.

    Favorite Characters Then and Now

Bert, Ernie, Kermit, and Grover have always been far more interesting to me than anyone else on the street. Cookie is funny, but he's a one-trick pony. Big Bird is whiny. Oscar only serves to balance out the cheese potential of the human actors. Herry was underdeveloped.

    The Raposo Factor

The music directors at SS apparently failed to recognize that that light jazzy sound was "their sound", and to deviate from that for the sake of more "modern" trends was to decline from the older, more classic mood of the series.

    David's Decline

I was shocked to see the "obese David" in the 1989 Gabriella birth episode.

    Snuffy and Big Bird

Was that the one titled, "Mr. Looper Visits the Proctologist"? :D

    Snuffy and Big Bird

Do they even make helicopters that can airlift a wooly mammoth from New York City nonstop to Honolulu (complete with meals)? :D

    Sesame Street in Hawaii!

The Hawaii episodes are a little weird. A whole lot of time is eaten up by hum-and-strum hippie bands outside of Buffy's teepee. (And why is Buffy living in a teepee? Is the cost of housing in NY really that much higher than Hawaii that they couldn't afford housing?) The Hawaii episodes do...

Your Thoughts: Muppets on the Nick & Jessica Variety Hour

Washington Post pans the show: The Nick & Jessica Hour, 60 Minutes Too Long

Your Thoughts: Muppets on the Nick & Jessica Variety Hour

Is Jessica's cleavage enough to keep an hour-long variety show afloat? While I would agree that the variety show format is due for a comeback, I don't think there are any network executives who know how to modernize the format and make it work 20 years after the last variety shows disappeared...

Differences in Sesame Street then and now

Again, I don't think that this is a matter of simple sentimental nostalgia vs. "anything new", as you have caricatured it. The real question is, does the new Sesame Street have the same energy, personality, and gentleness that it had back then? The answer is almost certainly "no" for...

Differences in Sesame Street then and now

Arguments about "different times" applies to how adults view things, but not kids. Kids respond to what they are presented. My 4 and 2-year-old seem to really enjoy the handful of Unpaved episodes I play for them. Then again, they don't watch hours of short-attention-span TV every day...

    Frank Oz interview

Goodness. Fozzie has a foul mouth... ;-) I'm a little struck by several comments: a) "It was a lot of work" b) "I never wanted to be pigeonholed" It's very strange to hear gigs at Sesame Street, the Muppet Show, and Star Wars referred to as a "daily grind", as if he's a coal miner or...

Differences in Sesame Street then and now

(Greetings from a newbie; I apologize if this is the millionth thread on this topic.) If I had to summarize in a single sentence the difference between the Sesame Street of the Henson era and the show with the same name today, it would be the following: "The overall tone and casting of...

    Trading Sesame Street Episodes

Greetings to all from a new member. Anyone still interested in trading some SSU episodes? I have the following episodes: 1969: 1,8,43,54 (SP, all rest are 1st-gen SLP) 1973: 536 (Another Quiet Day) 1975: 796 (Headline Howie) 1976: 926 (Grover's Surprise) 1977: 1037 (Big Bird & baby...

    Favorite Bert and Ernie Sketch

Greetings Lots of great sketches mentioned on this thread. (Unfortunately, it's hard to remember most of the sketches apart from the ones that were re-released on video and SSU.) There's one that I haven't seen for decades where Ernie wants to play tag while Bert is reading in a chair, and...
