I do know that Fantastic Mr. Fox was released in a ridiculously low number of theaters, only something like 50 theaters nation wide. So there's a pretty good chance that one of those theaters wasn't in your home-town.
Looking at it in that light, it doesn't seem like such a bad idea. A pretty good marketing tool actually.
