Hey gang,
As part of my build up to the second season of dotBoom, I redid the site from head to toe. I think the design is pretty snappy, but also the functionality is a little nutty; you should check it out!
It's in a pseudo-beta right now, at: http://new.dotboom.ca/
There's a fun section...
Jason's got a brand-new head!

When I get more foam, he'll get a new body. I'm thinking he'll get a full body, too.
Posting a lot, I know, but hey: I'm building a lot. :)
This is a completed Dan 2.0:

What do you think?

Check it out, Dan from dotBoom (Jason's Dad) is in progress. I've got the head done, the arms are halfway done, and I'm thinking that tonight I'll get the next and body done. Not sure how long the clothing will take me, though (this...
Here's another puppet we recently did. I actually finished him early this week, though he'd been 90% complete for a little while, so it's not like I'm finishing several puppets a week, or anything. :)

The seam is a little messed up, but it's not...
Hey all,
Here're some in-progress shots of a raccoon puppet that I'm building for season 2 of dotBoom. The raccoon controls Farrah's mind, you see. So he's got to look snazzy.
I'm liking the way the raccoon is coming together, despite the fact that he's a pretty simple, pretty straightforward...
Check it out!

Many of the pictures are the same, but the last few are of the completed puppet! What do you think?
I'm just about done the second version of Farrah, which is cool. It's a bit of a strange thing, considering I changed his skin tone a bit, so he doesn't look as much like the old Farrah as he could. That's a design decision, though, so it doesn't represent my screwing it up.
Another thing...
I am currently rebuilding Farrah from dotBoom (as well as basically all of the other characters). He's not yet done, but he's coming together well. This is how he looks right now:

Hope you like! I changed the colour I wanted him to...
Hey all,
As part of my ramp-up for a dotBoom 2.0, I'm rebuilding a chunk of the puppets, as I've gotten way better than I was when I built the first round. First up was Mojo, as he was the first one I built for the first season of dotBoom...
Hey all,
As part of my building of dotBoom2.0, I'm redesigning the puppets. A couple of them will have spherical heads, and here are the current heads for Mojo and Farrah, after five full attempts to get the right shape and size:

I just wrote a post on the Hoggworks Blog about making caricatures, as Staceyrebecca asked me a while ago, and it got me thinking. I don't think my answer is amazing, but if anyone wants to take a read and offer feedback, that would be very cool...
Hey all,
If I were to make a sculpted/carved foam head puppet, what type of foam would work best for that? I'm thinking of old-style Miss Piggy heads, Statler & Waldorf, that kind of thing.
Thanks!
Brian
Hey all,
In addition to doing my daily puppet rants for the next three (well, 2.5 at this point) weeks, I'm also putting up at least one puppet design every day for 3 weeks.
If you're curious to see what my designs are -- I'm going to try to be as creative as possible, and come up with...
Hey all,
There are a lot of great puppeteers in the Toronto and surrounding areas, and while I'm aware of a bunch of them -- and count a number of them as my friends -- I know there are a raft of great puppeteering talent that I'm totally unaware of. I'm going to guess that a lot of the other...
Hey all,
One of the various shows I'm working on right now is called The Rant Puppets. I've been doing it off and on for a while, having one of my puppets (typically Brian) ranting semi-hilariously and hopefully somewhat articulately about a specific topic. I'm ramping it up, and am planning on...
Hey all,
I'm starting a book, tentatively called "The New Puppetry," which would highlight a number of the new ways puppetry is being used, chiefly in the online space, but more broadly, anywhere in the world.
Much of the focus will likely be in the online uses of puppetry, but I won't limit...
Something I whipped up this morning:
http://www.hoggworks.com/2008/11/googly-monster-sketch/
What do you think? The eye-stalks are meant to be portable.
I wrote a post today about taking the craft of puppetry seriously, which is here:
http://www.hoggworks.com/2008/11/taking-it-seriously/
One of the people who I criticized for not taking the craft seriously posted a vitriolic response to the post (though he's an angry man comic, so I doubt that...
