It is hard to tell where all the sketches and animation come from. I will keep a lookout on Sesamstrasse(Germany). I am pretty sure the American cast can visit the other streets. I know I have seen Ernie on Sesamstrasse helping to take care of a baby.

30th Sesamstrasse There was a special show the 30th anniversary for Sesamstrasse. But no DVD or anything.

Ernie and Bert clips are shown on more often on international shows. If you go throught the Wiki, you will see names for Ernie and Bert, but not as many for Elmo. Here in Germany we almost always have an Ernie and Bert clip for each episode. E&B were even here to film clips for the lastes episode.
