I don't remember the movie exactly, but I think it was from Moulin Rouge.
Besides, it leads up to that great joke:

I don't think so.
It's just a technique used by the film makers to add drama... if it had ben a slow bit, it wouldn't have been as much of a shock for us to realize his world had changed.
and Lighting is simple enough. HA! That's probably the hardest part, getting the lighting to look good. If you hook your video camera up to a television set, it's easier to figure out what your lighting will come out like.
