Sorry to muffin the thread, but just for the sake of clarification I've never worked directly with anyone from Kids on the Block Toronto. They are a good organization though with a lot of dedicated volunteers. They do a lot of good in their community.
sorry, something weird happened when I edited my post above. What I was going to say in the first paragraph was that it's very difficult to get the proper insurance unless you're a student and your school has a policy students can use, or you know a production company that's insured who will...
I think he meant shooting all of Chicken A's dialogue with the puppet, then re-dressing it and using the same puppet to shoot Chicken B's dialogue from another angle.
If you're doing it by the book, to shoot on TTC property (including vechicles I think) you have to get a permit and arrange permission through Toronto's Film Office. A rate gets negotiated and you also must have a $2 million General Comprehensive Public Liability Insurance Policy, which is very...
As others have already mentioned, the time you budget is really, really important and whatever you think you need you should allow an extra 20% because inevitably there are delays, changes and zillion things can (and often will!) go wrong and take more time than you expect.
If you're looking to...
Ron Binion has a good page on "Book of Pooh" (the first Shadowmation series) at http://www.transformedpuppet.com/home/pooh1.htm and it gives a little insight in to the process.
The show is done against greenscreen and as Blink mentioned the puppets are just Bunraku-style puppets performed by...
You might be interested in this...one of the projects I'm currently involved with is an open-source 3D animation program called Panda Puppet. It basically allows you to program different facial expressions (sort of like the way iClone does) and then trigger them as you perform a digital puppet...
Puppetry/video game mash-ups seem to be getting popular and I just posted about a couple Pac Man-related ones in my blog at http://puppetvision.blogspot.com/2006/03/video-game-theatre.html
The latest is a cool pilot for a show called Videogame Theater that uses puppetry. The lead puppeteer...
I think iClone is more of an animation tool than a true digital puppetry app - because there's no way to control a character in real-time - but it's very cool nonetheless. Please check out the awesome stuff that Pauly's been doing with it!
I saw this on Slashdot and wanted to pass it along, an article from the Economist about the Open Source movement and it's advantages/disadvantages. One of the points the article makes is that for any open source project to thrive it needs a rigid, business-like organizational structure. If...
There's also the famous 1968 Women's Day Muppet pattern - http://www.puppetminister.com/links/muppets-blatch.pdf
It's not perfect, but if you want something basic and free you can get good results by playing with it.
I'm always mentioning this, but if you want to get a good understanding of how mechs work, pick up Michael Browse's book "Figure Making Can Be Fun". It has loads of diagrams and is very helpful. Some free examples are available online at http://www.puppetsandprops.com/Mechanics.html and the...
I've recently been taking a look at the latest version of Celtx, which is really impressive. It basically allows multiple people to collaborate on a film online and it's free, open-source software. I saw a very early version about a year ago and was not very impressed, but the new version of...

Sorry if these were already posted earlier in the thread, I didn't have time to re-read it and check.
I think this thread has been really interesting too and very insightful. I think the idea of collaborative and even open source is really viable, but like you've both said the key part is someone taking ownership of something and getting it up and running.
I know different people have done the plush toy/puppet tie-in thing. I worked on a pilot for a TV series that didn't sell where the workshop designed the main characters from day one so they could be duplicated exactly as plush toys/puppets.
Axtell Expressions sells (or used to sell) expensive...
