Maybe they were meant to be bad impressions on purpose, and the muppets thinking they were good was part of the humour of it all.
Mark Hammil's impressions may have been the same gag in reverse, they muppets couldn't see how good his were, but Rich's sounded excellent to them.

I just realized what you said exactly in this post Caroline. And it's true. Especially in the case of the leader piggy. He (or she;) ) had the best rockin' time of all with not just one rock, but two :D !
Wouldn't it make the comparison so perfect if the first piggy to fall through peered over the edge of the basket and scrunched his snout to the camera at one point? LOL
And afterwards we see a pair of long beaked woodpeckers laughing together evilly just like the goat. Implying that they were pecking through the basket above where the piggies were standing and finally popping the balloon itself with the third one still aboard.
