A New Technique for Shooting the Legs of a Puppet

I really like this technique. I may have to steal -- er use -- it. ;)

Movable jaw for a fullbody muppet costume?

It looks to me like these are radio-controlled. They're way too in-synch with each other to be up to the individual performers. Also, if you look at them, they never open and close their mouths any differently (larger or smaller movements). They seem to all be either open or closed.

So Who's going to Comic Con in San Diego July 20-24

I'll be there on Thursday. I haven't decided if I'll be bringing any of the puppets along. Maybe I'll bring the puppet I made from all the scraps you gave me a few months ago. ;)

    My first Muppet... Kermit!

    It's back. Here's the tutorial: http://www.projectpuppet.com/servlet/Page?template=useful-stitches-tutorial

    My first Muppet... Kermit!

Are you hand stitching or machine stitching? If you're hand stitching, the ladder stitch will help hide those seams. You don't want any kind of seam allowance at all and you want to butt up the two pieces while sewing. Even regular fleece will work using this technique. A good tutorial on how to...

    Fozzie Replica

I think that when Terry was making the MR prototype, he had to paint the scarf by hand. You can probably do the same. I'd use Acrylic paints on a non-stretchy fabric. If you're really lucky, you might find something that won't fray a lot, so the edges will be easier to work with. You probably...

    Dying Foam

You have to use floral paint that they sell at Michaels and other craft stores. Regular spray paint will make the foam brittle.

    Making Clothes

And the sleeves are really easy to make as well -- they're basically tube socks with a hole at the "toe" end for the shoelaces to go through. (the open end becomes the cuff).

    Dying Foam

I haven't done it, but from what I've heard, you want to make a rather weak dye bath at first and leave it submerged for about half an hour. You might try experimenting with a piece of scrap foam first to make sure you know how the real deal will react to it.

    Making Clothes

The head, arms and torso are all separate pieces. The torso is like a tube that the head (with a long neck sleeve) goes inside. The arms are attached by shoelaces that go into two holes on each side of the torso and are tied off on the inside... So, what I did was make a new torso with the...

    Patterns

I would use something like a cheap fleece (like from Joann's). That way, it will have the same stretch as the real fabric, if not the same seam-hiding properties (although it does work pretty well if sewn properly). You can usually pick up fleece for about $5/yard. You can make a puppet out of...

Not to worry -- Most of the time, he's naked (well -- except for his hat).

    Making Clothes

So... I've been building puppets now for 17 years, and this weekend was the first time I've made custom clothes for my puppets. Actually, I didn't really do it this time either, but I took advantage of the way I've done the heads and arms this go-around to make a costume change. What I did...

    Working with Fur

I usually only glue the fabric at the mouth. Everything else is just a very snug fit.

    Working with Fur

I would dart it, I pretty much use fur the same way I use Antron or any other material on a puppet.

Actually, he dos, He says that he doesn;t use it, I never have, either and it seems to work fine without it.

How to Dye Antron Fleece Tutorial

One other thing I noticed about my latest batch as compared to the batch I did a few years ago -- no wrinkles! I think the combination of the spin cycle and letting it dry on the line kept all the crazy wrinkling that happened from wringing it out by hand from happening. Here's to happy accidents!

Anybody happen to know the dimensions for an Elmo type puppet?

I have no idea what the real dimensions are, but if you don't do a youtube video after you've completed the red one where he bites into a bad apple, collapses, then comes back up as the green one, I'll hold it personally against you. ;)
