(several hours earlier, around 5 PM)
Nora: (struggling with a silvery-black number) Hey, would somebody help me zip my dress up?
Storyteller: (peach and bronze) Dear, dear, somebody's eaten too much ice cream...uh, do I still have curlers in my hair?
Nora: It's not the ice cream...
(loud chorus of cheers at RHLC table)
Nora: How come we haven't said anything yet?
MN: Eh, you know me and awards shows. I just like to sit back and watch.(looks over shoulder) Oh, Richard's here; guess he finally got over his cold. Take a bow, Richard!
(a tux-clad R.H. stands and bows)
MN: All right, the story's been safely dispatched. Now who's up for ice cream?
Nora: Me! Me!
Storyteller: (grabs purse)Oooh, there's one radish ripple cone with my name on it!
Nora: Yeah, and I want the strawberry with the chocolate-coated shortbread chunks in it! What are you going for?
MN: Oh...
Holy cow...first one of my old roommates ran off and got married over the summer, and now Sara's heading for the altar. We do grow up so quickly...
Way to go, Sara!
Nora: (reading comics in the main room) Yeah, there's Deep Freeze...and I hear they just opened up a new parlor on the other side of town. I think it's called Cold Comfort or something.
(MN appears from kitchen with a cup of tea and a bowl of ramen)
Storyteller: Deadline time again?
MN: Yeah...
Well, it was really neat looking at all the personal details on the patches; one guy loved chocolate, another had traveled all over Europe and a third had Bible verses all over his patch. It really puts a human face on what, in other cases, would have been a list of statistics.
But on the...
Wow...and here I thought elementary school was rough.
Saw the AIDS quilt today, gang. However, they only brought in one block of eight panels...and it didn't contain any of Richard's patches. Oh, well.
But it wasn't a total loss; one of the campus church groups was running the display, and...
I hope so too...but there are so many patches in so many blocks.
I'll let you know if I see one. Since they've got pictures of the four patches posted in Richard's tribute section, I know what to look for.
(back in room several hours later; MN, Storyteller and Nora are lounging around in pajamas, eating garlic-peanut butter popcorn and drinking hot orange juice.)
Nora: So here's the rundown...
MN: Richard, who was bored to tears over being stuck in bed all day, goes outside to do a little...
I think I should have mentioned this earlier, but I'll go ahead and mention it anyway.
They're going to a display a portion of the AIDS Quilt on the Great Lawn here from ten to two tomorrow. I think that's really cool, and I'm going to go out and view it...and if I see one of Richard's patches...
MN, Storyteller and Nora encounter Sara and Scooter on the way into town.
Storyteller: Oooh...that stew smells divine!
MN: I think Kathy and the boys are definitely going to get well, what with all the soup and stew we're sending them.
Nora: Storyteller, what's that you're holding...
I know what you're talking about; we've got the 40th anniversary special tunes on CD; it's got renditions by David Benoit, B.B. King, Kenny G. and Dave Brubeck, among others.
And the Peanuts specials introduced a whole generation to Vince Guaraldi's tunes.
My favorites are A Charlie Brown...
Let's face it; high school's a drag wherever you go, be it public, private or parochial. I think it has to do with the raging hormones of adolescence or something.
(next morning)
Nora: How'd they like the soup? I was asleep when you came back.
MN: They loved it...but they're all going to have to stay in bed for another day.
Storyteller: (chopping radishes and potatoes at counter) We'll just have to make more. And later on I'll show you my recipe for...
I know. In high school (and I went to a private school: a drag of the first order) they always told us that college would be murderous and challenging and that the professors wouldn't care what we thought.
College for me, while challenging, has been a treat compared to high school, and the profs...
And I could really use a holiday right about now...I'm gonna be ripped by the time this semester's over.
I also kind of noticed that you can tell who's playing what Muppet by studying their arm and hand movements. You notice that Scooter and a lot of Richard's other characters often tilt...
