I just saw a clip of it and I can barely tell any difference in the characters designs. And while the show does look a bit cheaper, does it really matter? How much effort was ever put into this show in the first place?

I say leave it as is. It's very New York but not very Sesame Street. I think maybe part of the reason it doesn't quite work is because the signs have too many words on them. Sesame Street signs are usually simple with very few words. For example, "Fix It Shop", "Laundromat", both tell you...
I dunno, they haven't done this with any of the other characters when they were recast. The Count, Prairie Dawn and Ernie were back in action almost immediately after getting new performers. So i'm still a bit worried.
Something I noticed, in the closing "Smarter, Stronger, Kinder" song, it's pretty obvious that all of the characters were super imposed in and none of the Muppets were filmed together at the same time. Does anyone know why this is?

I think to a certain extent, yes. Many times when i'm feeling grumpy or sad, I just force myself to laugh for a little while, that usually helps a lot, even when it's extremely fake sounding laughter it turns into real laughter after a while. Smiling in a mirror also helps.
