A easy way to copyright You can always make a copy of your pattern- along with some pictures and mail them to yourself- don't open the mail when you get it :-) the post mark will act as a reference to when you made it. Easy and cheap.;)

There are many different ways to skin a cat- like I said, trial and error, come up with your own ways that works for you. PS- No animals were harmed in the making of this reply :-)...especially cats :)
