We took some video of our Italian Greyhound and a Rowlf puppet once -- it quickly turned from an interview into what looks like a mauling -- or at least a make-out session gone bad. ;)
Let us know the quality of the bolt -- I've heard from puppet builder firends that the quality of Antron has been varied lately. Some of the stuff he's gotten has been unusable.
The one advantage I've found to making them out of flat foam is that it's a lot easier to make patterns for multiple versions of the same character.
When you carve them out of foam, you're more or less making a one-of-a-kind puppet. When you build from flat foam, you can keep a paper copy of...
Contact Cement is what I like to use -- just make sure you use it in a well-ventilayted area (or better -- outdoors). I like to pour a little bit into a paper plate and dab it onto the ends of the foam sheet with a scrap piece of foam. You have to dab it onto both ends you want to join, let it...
I did buy a pretty high-end consumer camera about five years ago (the Sony HDR-HC1). It set me back about $1400, but there are a lot of better cameras on the market now for a lot less. I've had a lot of luck fooling around with the little "Flip" cameras that go for about $100. Ah, technology...
I have a lot of really cool friends that get as crazy about my projects as I do. A lot of what I do is just blind devotion, being too dumb to quit and scavenging what I can to get it done. I have a looooong production schedule on this thing -- the nice thing about it is that it's afforded me...
Yeah -- she was featured in the last 5 or 6 years of the comic -- she was a robot that was built to capitalize on pop music and just sort of stuck around.
This is the prototype, using Polar Fleece and testing all of the mechanisms. I'm about 90% sure that I'm going to make a new one once the...
You know what? I just figured out how you could make your Kermit look more "on model." Move his eyes back on his head so they sit closer to the top of his head. As they sit now, they look like they hit your hand at about the first joint of your hand. I think on the real Kermit, they hit closer...
Try using plastic lids from Ice Cream or Margerine tubs. In a oinch, you can also use cardboard, but it won't last for very long.
You might also check local hardware store for something called "Gasket Rubber." Most places have 6 x 6 inch squares of rubber that is enough for a puppet mouth...
Still chugging along on this project. The set's almost ready to be painted and I started working on some of the puppets. Here's my first rod puppet, made from a wig form:

(and yes, she'll have a body sooner or later)
I'm not really concerned about matching anything. I just want to make sure that when they say "flesh" I know what they mean... after all, there's a lot fo diffenece between a "Bert Flesh color" and an "Ernie Flesh color" -- not to mention the wide range of colors on human beings.
So, I'm going to out in an order with Georgia Stage and they mentioned that they now offer a "Flesh Color" version of the 12 oz Antron. Since all of my puppets that aren't furry use a peach color fabric anyway, I was thinking about paying the extra $4 a yard for this fabric.
I hate dyeing --...
I've always heard he was made from two cardboard mailing tubes -- one that was slightly smaller than the other was used for the head and the body (or shoulders, at least), were made from the larger diameter one so that the head could shoot down inside the body when he got scared.
So -- it looks like my wife lost her job. In an attempt to think of ways that I can supplement more of our income, I was wondering if it's worth my time and effort to try to build a couple of puppets for sale on ebay. I know a lot of you do this as well.
It seems that in recent years, puppets...
