I dunno. I mean, he feels more of a real kid than Elmo, but I don't think he has that "hook" to differentiate him as anything more than a young male monster; I guess maybe the whole "step brother" thing, but he has to be more than that.

That interview was a million times better / more informative than the actual episode, though the host needs some practice in keeping things on topic (asking how Craig and Stephanie got married was not needed).
Honestly, regardless of that nine-month window waiting period between HBO and PBS, the HBO deal is really a win-win for all involved - HBO gets a popular brand to entice new subscribers with, Sesame gets to keep producing new seasons and specials, and PBS gets 'em for free.
Caroll also claimed to have performed the Elmo puppet as "Baby Monster" at some point. Given how long ago those shoots took place and how much they did during them, his memory on certain details would naturally be fuzzy. It might not have been from season 1, but it might have been from an early...
