Sam and Friends Book Read our review of the long-awaited book, "Sam and Friends - The Story of Jim Henson's First Television Show" by Muppet Historian Craig Shemin.
That spider segment must have been the only one to teach (not just mention) any shape beyond the "basic four": other shape lessons on the show have covered only circles, rectangles, triangles or squares. (I bet there are a lot of kids who'd never heard of other shapes until third or fourth grade!)
I'd do almost anything legal, moral and physically possible to get a look at some non-Spanish international clips. (I've seen Plaza Sésamo about a dozen times, and Shalom Sesame when PBS broadcast that for a week; but the foreign version I miss most is in Swedish.)
I bookmarked a longish Sesame Street playlist last night, and can see all the oldies just fine. So you're probably right about a temporary problem at their end...
Those are definitely "did you notice that?" moments, but the filmers didn't have THAT much control over the background action. Two things I always wondered about those films: First, why was the letter never named out loud as it usually is in letter clips? Second, what word were those letters...
"YO" and accidents
I remember that "YO" cartoon-song..my Spanish vocabulary is not that good, but the lyrics basically translate to "I am [whatever the boy was pretending to be]", ending with "I am tired" [at which he curls up and sleeps on top of the word].
As for accidentally dropping a...
Those numbers look as if they (and the rainbow-colored background) were made from paper streamers curled/folded into shape; it could have been done manually, but I have no way to tell.
Come on, McDonald's itself has offered more healthy foods for both children and adults recently...not to mention sponsoring adult exercise programs. Calling them "the enemy" is unfair to the kids who order apple slices and milk in a Happy Meal...and to the moms who order the fruit/nut salad (I...
If the writers were sincere about teaching good nutrition, they'd have made those lyrics "EVERYTHING's a sometimes food". Overindulging in any one kind of food--whether it's an obvious junk item like cookies, or an otherwise healthful item like apples or porridge--is not good at any age. Heck...
The "Baker" tune is used ONLY if the number of the day ranges from 1-10. For zero and 11-20, the Count clips appear--either his singing organ (which vanishes on 0), or his "Number of the Day" waltz/duet with the Countess. (I don't know about you, but her "STOP!!!" shouts scare the heck out of me...)
"That's eight! Eight episodes in a row! Ah-ah-ah!"
[SFX: maniacal laughter, thunder and lightning]
Do any of you remember a string of eight consecutive episodes in which the letter X was a sponsor? I personally saw that on TV at the end of the "two letters/one number" years (though the exact...
"That's H...a soul H"
It's actually from a fairly recent song/animation, with a dark-skinned guitarist who wears the H on a gold chain around his neck. He sings about the letter's sound and a few relevant words, including "help" (which gets spelled out, unlike the rest). The song ends with...
I do remember more cartoons with a different theme; it's just that "That's About the Size of It" ranks high on my list of miscellaneous favorites. Sorry to give you the wrong impression!
Good guess, but the bleeped word is supposed to rhyme with 'tell'... If I had enough musical talent and a mike on this computer, I'd love to record that song.
Here's another one to sing when the new shows bore you to tears:
"Jingle Bells,
This show smells--
Elmo is a freak.
What a drag it...
Somehow, I dimly recall a 70s episode being "brought to you today by the entire alphabet"--with no numbers mentioned at all, and no specific letters flashed onscreen. Back when the late, great CTW forums existed, someone said they recalled "no episode NOT sponsored by a number"; I might be...
I watched the show from Season One onward...and only recently stopped. The Sesame Street I remember most would have to be the "golden age" 70s episodes; the 80s had me wondering "what the hey?" with new characters and "around the corner", but still felt like decent programming. But after the...
"That's About the Size of It" is one of my favorite Sesame cartoons which don't mention letters or numbers; even when I was a "kindergarten kid in the nursery school" ;) , the music was comforting and the animation put me into a thoughtful mood.
Here's one...ONE more signature from an old-school viewer! HAHAHAHA! (Too bad the Count doesn't have a smiley...) Seriously, though: I told the author "It's a shame that people who grew up watching the show in the 70s won't have the best of Sesame Street to show their grandchildren."
If only someone could convert those Flash bits to .wmv format; I'd love to see the Sesame Street I remembered as a girl.
P.S. For other people who think the show has gone downhill since Henson died, I wrote this song parody:
TV [Bleep]* (A Sesame Street Fan's Lament)
(sung to the tune of...
