Sam and Friends Book Read our review of the long-awaited book, "Sam and Friends - The Story of Jim Henson's First Television Show" by Muppet Historian Craig Shemin.
I know of only one other trip for which the theme song was redone (the Hawaiian trip used the usual lyrics, if I recall correctly): The Montana trip episodes also included new lyrics sung by the cast members as they traveled (with the same "long, long way" part at the end of each verse). Even...
"No plot" episodes: what happened?
At the risk of sounding like a smart-aleck, I'm curious about the episodes summarized as "no plot". What happened on those episodes: was there no street story at all, were those episodes clip shows, or am I overlooking some third possibility? Those of you...
I've watched Sesame Street since at least 1971, but never saw the "Fifteen" cartoon until the mid-90s. (It's one of the best recent number-teaching clips, in my opinion: I loved the play on "being fifteen" and having the number sing a doo-wop ballad in a lonely teenager's voice.)
By the way...
Drtooth: The Icelandic segment is new, and I heard three or four others were coming (though I don't know how long some of the ones that aired this season have been around).
Daffyfan: I've seen a few old Kermit clips on Plaza Sésamo, all right; I'm still not sure what the terms of that...
"Simplistic" is right; although Season 37 has shown a few well-made, funny episodes so far, the latest one is mostly forgettable. Only one new segment stands out (the Amy/Cookie Monster interview); I couldn't help laughing at Cookie's constant interruptions, not to mention the way Amy imitated...
Actually, Sesame Workshop would have to pay Disney (which has the legal rights to some Muppets, including you-know-who) for the right to use any clips with Kermit as a main character. That rule applies equally to old and new clips, although crowd scenes/walk-on parts are an exception (huh?).
Sheesh, the people at Sesame Workshop are turning every character (well, every major character) into a diet-and-exercise spokesperson these days. I feel a parody song coming on: "Nutrition Is A Sometimes Theme"! ;-)
*nods* Even though I didn't like the look of their new home, I was glad to see some classic characters officially return to the Street (Elmo's World and crowd scenes don't count as a return, in my opinion).
That felt as least as distracting as the bugs' CGI look (or was it Claymation?): the same milk carton might not last for thirty-odd years, but the sketch designer could have used a newer one at least.
Oh heck yeah...it's a shame that the sponsor number and the "character counts as high as possible" number are BOTH limited to 20 nowadays (Joe Hundredguy and the "24" spoof were exceptions). I don't speak as just another nostalgic fan; seeing the clips and songs about higher numbers would teach...
Trash Gordon overdose
Is it just me, or does anybody else miss the occasional episode endings without Trash Gordon in them? Bert opening birthday packages with the sponsors, Telly (if I remember rightly) hatching them from eggs, Big Bird explaining them while pretending to be a spaceship...I...
You weren't the only fan to confuse Olivia with Susan when both characters existed. I do hope Susan sticks around as long as she can; besides, if Gordon can be played by three different actors then why couldn't the Workshop allow that for Susan? She isn't a good candidate for a "death...
Sesame Street without Kermit is like Casablanca without Bogart....I hope he won't be excluded from the DVD either, for the sake of the fans who have one. They should've been able to get permission for the old clips, just as they did for the songs with him as a background character. :)
Bingo! After seeing ten health-pushing sketches on Sesame Street, five days a week...what you want to bet that a lot of those kids trade their fruit/veggie snacks for cookies at school? What you want to bet that those same kids show absolutely no interest in dancing, trying sports, or getting...
The echo, I assume, was inspired by the opening title on The Muppet Show's Pigs-pigs-pigs In-in-in Space-space-space... :D
Not to mention the Sam Spade allusions in that sketch: the way that "I" narrated the skit, the girlfriend's appearance, and the odd clues...
Oh yeah...trying to...
I'd hate to see Susan written out of the show (especially by dying); the idea of Gordon as a single dad seems bizarre somehow, even though Miles is old enough to graduate from high school. After all, I remember reading that Susan and Gordon were created as a "traditional" inner-city...
I always hated sketches that ended with characters falling and/or hurting themselves. Yes, that includes the "Baker" counting films and Luis/Bob's "train puzzle" sketch, among others; when the victim was a recurring character, that bothered me even more.
On a similar note, any sketch that...
Absolutely! Most preschoolers can easily be scared even by imaginary threats; giving Sparky lyrics like "I'm afraid of getting thinner, won't you please become my dinner?" was a Bad Idea in my opinion.
Mind if I e-mail you a couple of protest songs I wrote about Sesame Street going downhill...
Agreed on both counts! Grover's perpetual job-hopping becomes hard for even a four-year-old to believe after watching it for a whole season. For that matter, I doubt he'd accept Grover's change from an innocent employee with an impossible customer...to an incurable bumbler with an innocent...
