Sam and Friends Book Read our review of the long-awaited book, "Sam and Friends - The Story of Jim Henson's First Television Show" by Muppet Historian Craig Shemin.
On one hand, I liked the general idea of the "Word on the Street" (including Murray's talking to real people). On the other, most of the celebrity spots for those words could have illustrated the meaning in a more vivid, memorable context than the ones Sesame Workshop chose.
That cartoon still inspires mixed emotions in me: On one hand, seeing the king beat those dragons so easily is cool--especially when the last one tries to run for his life. *LOL* On the other, I can't blame King Minus for "subtracting" himself after he accidentally makes the princess...
Other than the "cast trip" storylines (all of which I'd love to see uncut), I'd like to see the main events in Luis and Maria's relationship: falling in love, getting married, highlights of the pregnancy, and Gabi's birth.
I agree, JimHensonHour...even though Sesame Street is an hour long and the Muppet Show is half that, I'd like to see more full-length episodes on the next set of Old School DVDs. After all, a lot of eventful stories took place during the rest of the season!
Abby's OK as new characters go; the idea of a fairy reading "real people tales" struck me as especially clever. Still, I agree with you that Rosita is the best female monster on the show: her personality, history and relationships with other characters have developed more thoroughly than Zoe's...
I've heard of some over-zealous parents complaining about Cookie Monster's language in a recent "Letter of the Day" sketch. The offending phrase? He said "What the hey..." before giving in and eating the letter cookie. Worrying about a mild, not-so-obvious expression like that goes beyond...
How about these "bad examples":
- The fact that a rock band calls a random stranger from a pay phone to sing about telephones. (Sure, they get arrested in the end, but...)
- The fact that a "mad painter" vandalizes people's property with numbers and never suffers any real punishment.
-...
The Mad Painter painted numbers on a lot of stuff, so it's easy to confuse whixh numbers went where...
2 went on the sail of someone else's boat at a marina.
3 (in various condiments) went on bread at a woman's picnic.
4 went on a woman's umbrella.
5 went on a gorilla's beach ball at the zoo...
I mean that there are a lot fewer human characters involved in Sesame Street plotlines than there were 20 years ago; even some of the "originals" like Susan, Gordon, and Bob seldom appear on the show now. All the same, I doubt that any of them would leave Sesame Street permanently just to teach...
The trouble with teaching some milestones is that they're hard to use with such a small cast of human characters. The last character death discussed on Sesame Street coincided with the death of an actor; the last birth story arc coincided with Sonia Manzano's real-life pregnancy. Marriage? I...
Thank heaven that it's not just old-school fans without kids, who miss seeing Cookie Monster eat cookies and act like a monster. The whole idea of the original character wasn't to be a role model for healthy eating--or for any other behavior; Cookie was supposed to embody young children's...
