What you need is a sampler and a midi keyboard. A sampler can be a physical hardware module or it can be software. I would go for a software sampler. There are many to chosose from. Some are standalone, some are plugins for VST hosts, such as cubase, logic, sonar etc... Just do a search on...

I prefer to make smaller puppets. Where the headpattern can fit well on an A4-size sheet of paper. I think the puppets become more comfortable, eazier to perform, and it also takes less time to assemble them ;)

When i made my Eric-puppet, i used cheap foam for the head. It's 1cm in thickness, and it's regular upholstry-foam. It's perfect for small puppets like this, but it's not as durable as scott-foam. But if you have a money issue and still want to build small puppets, it's perfect. Here's a pic...
