From my understanding, it was not. In 1991, the Hensons announced plans to do holiday-specific Muppet specials to re-introduce the characters. A Halloween special and a Christmas special were planned. Somewhere down the line, Disney decided they'd get more mileage out of a theatrically released...

I have a feeling TRON Legacy underperforming may have had something to do with the lack of Muppet merchandise. Whether or not the movie was a hit, Disney probably didn't want a repeat of TRON just in case.

Actually it did, I can find box office trackings of it. It just never really got a big release or even a large limited release.

I can't speak for everybody else's theaters, but the closest theater to me just had their last showings of The Muppets yesterday. So yeah, I think this movie only has a tiny bit left to go before it's done.
