The Food Thread (Non Instagram Edition)

I found an old commercial that made me misty-eyed. There used to be a restaurant chain (it was only in New York and Florida) called Beefsteak Charlie’s. They were one of the first places to have a free salad bar with your steak. My parents took me there for my 12th birthday. For my simple...

None Like it Hot: The "I Hate the Heat" Club

There might be a way around it. If the heating/AC is so outdated, you can report to your town’s building inspector. He might force the landlord to make improvements. The only downside is, he can also condemn the place and you’d have to leave. Unfortunately, you won’t get any security deposit back.

there’s a great channel on YouTube called Company Man. He explains in great detail of Baskin Robbins’ history, their ties with Dunkin, and how they’re bigger around the world than they are here.

I’m surprised we have Baskin Robbins out here, they’re based in California. There was one that shared a spot with Dunkin Donuts, but didn’t last too long. The big ice cream place growing up in New York or New Jersey was Carvel. You know now how there’s a Starbucks on every corner? Once upon a...

I got a question for anybody. Depending on where you live, what do they call submarine sandwich? In New England, they’re grinders. In Philly, they’re hoagies. In New Orleans, they’re po’ boys. In my little speck of the universe, they’re heroes. Are there any other regional names for them?

I still like KFC. There was an urban legend years ago, that KFC doesn’t serve chicken, but these mutants born without beaks. Good story, but that’s all it is. KFC gets its chicken from Tyson, not some mutant lab. And the chicken isn’t actually fried, it’s pressure cooked. That keeps it from...

That’s the way it’s always been. Fast food usually means cheap labor, and there’s never been a shortage of kids to do the job. Only a shortage of kids who do the job WELL. But management doesn’t mind. They know if you quit, they can hire someone else like you in no time. It’s not a long term...

I Not so much the food, but Dairy Queen has been around forever. One near me is an outdoor stand that’s open year round, even in the dead of winter. I loved their Misty floats. Cherry slush topped with vanilla soft serve. Guaranteed brain freeze or your money back. 🥶

The New What Made You Frown Today Thread

I know the feeling all too well. I don’t feel sad, but it does feel strange some other family is living there now. At least they fixed it up real nice. New windows, new siding, new trees, I can only imagine what the inside looks like.

My wife and I love Red Lobster too. We tend to go there for our anniversary. They’ve changed hands a number of times. A while back they were owned by a company called Darden (I believe they also owned Red Robin) A few years back, we went all out and got surf and turf, and our waitress gave us a...

Seafood! Everyone has different tastes, to each his own. As far as seafood restaurants go, three come to mind Fuzzy Fish 101 Dead Lobster. Used to be better, but the best thing they ever had was their stuffed sole. Filet of sole stuffed with crabmeat, in a butter white wine sauce. Heaven. Long...

I was around way back when, during the closing credits, the last house you saw had the NET logo and a big antenna on the roof. In the fall of 1970 (I was 2) NET became PBS. Apart from some minor changes in the layout in the neighbored during the credits, very little changed.

At my last restaurant job, we made our own ranch. It’s not that hard. I can’t recall the measurements, but the ingredients are: Buttermilk Sour cream (in a pinch you can use mayo) Salt and pepper Dill Lemon juice Chives We made it in 5 gallon batches just about every day. The people up front...

As a kid, I loved Ants on a log. That’s a celery stalk with peanut butter and raisins. Now, I only use celery for soup. 90% of the soups out there, you need carrots, celery, and onions. Even pea soup.

Ranch rules! I was skeptical of chicken and waffles myself. When I finally tried it, I was pleasantly surprised. One pizza chain that never gets mentioned is sbarro. They existed in malls. The pizza was good, not great. Deduct points because it was pre made. They served Italian food too, but...

I wonder if anyone will ever grasp how important Mr. Rogers was. On rare occasions he would appear on late night talk shows, and he was exactly the same onstage and off. Of course that made him the butt of a lot of jokes. But he even enjoyed when Eddie Murphy spoofed him.
