I've known them to be called tornadoes, cyclones and hurricanes. I don't know if there's any distinctive difference but the overall effect is horrifyingly the same.
If I may...

There actually is a difference: a tornado is a funnel cloud that forms in the sky, and touches the ground (if they touch water, they're water spouts), while hurricanes are huge storm systems with a hole in the center called an "eye".

Right! And during the eye of the storm perching my glasses on the tip of my nose & attempting to look smart the weather is calm. But it only lasts about 10-15 minutes.

You know, I've been through tornado warnings, before, but I've never actually been struck by a tornado, however, back in 2005, a funnel cloud (just the cloud) brushed right over Knoxville... it never touched the ground, so it was never an official tornado, but still, it was hair-raising.

The funny thing is, tornadoes are actually one of my biggest fascinations, and one of my biggest fears: for some reason, I've always been intriqued by extreme weather, especially tornadoes (I swear, if I wasn't a puppeteer, I'd probably be a storm chaser), however, I'm absolutely scared to death of the prospect of being struck by a tornado (and it's actually a recurring nightmare of mine seeing a tornado heading towards my home and knowing there's nothing I can do). I really believe it's one of those fears that once I face it, then there's nothing left to fear.

Ironically, I don't think I'd be scared of being through a hurricane... I really don't (probably because I don't live close to a hurricane zone, so I've nothing to worry about), but I actually would like to face a hurricane just once, to see what it's like: I've been in hard downpours, I've walked against gails of wind, and I've been hit by a falling tree branch... put them all together, that should be interesting to experience.

There's a guy I've been friends with for a while who likes chasing tornadoes. (personally I think he's nuts, but that's just me. He's not from from MC though) I'd be scared spitless to chase a tornado, but whatever floats your boat.
I just hate when the weather forecasters threaten us with the forecast of a hurricane & the worst we get is an inch or so of rain & the power doesn't even flicker! But when there is a hurricane they can be nasty! The wind blowing stuff all over the place outside, rain pouring for several hours & the power goes out for up to a week! Here's something kind of funny. During a bad hurricane when I was a kid, my dad was such a sound sleeper, he slept right through it!
Now something not so funny:
Hurricane Gloria happened back in 1985 (I think) Following it the power was out ,I was over a friend's house & she was doing my hair by candlelight in her bathroom. I had my eyes half closed & she was putting hair spray & mousse in my hair.Well, the between the 2 hair products & the candle must have come in contact with my hair because my head caught on fire! I dove for the floor to put my head out! So we figured I was OK after that. I walked my happy butt home & right after I walked in the door, the first thing my parents said was,"What happened to you?" Long story short my father had to take me to the burn unit at the hospital! I suffered 2nd degree burns on the right side of my nose & on my forehead. That night the froggin' power came back on. (Go figure, huh?)
PS. When I saw that my "hair stylist" friend was on Facebook,I sent a friend request to her & asked her if she's done anymore hairdos lately (joking around) She told me that she STILL felt bad!But I told her to relax & that I'm fine!(She doesn't really do hair)

I hate when the weather forecasters go all Chester A. Bum when it's like 80-110 outside, and they're all "OMGTHISISTHEGREATESTWEATHERI'VEEVERSEENINMYLIFE! ! !" but as soon as it dips under 60, they start whining and cry'ning about how cold and miserable it is outside.
