Now, Muppet Treasure Island... GREAT movie. That's a modern Muppet production that I think really, really worked. It has its problems too, such as the characters not playing themselves and the Muppets (sort of) playing second fiddle to humans, but otherwise, I think it's the closest to "classic Muppets" this generation's ever seen (and it's almost last generation's).
The weirdest thing about the MTI/MCC thing is that everyone I know (Literally EVERYONE I know) watched MCC every single Christmas without fail. And that's about all they know of the Muppets.

MTI never hit on that kind of scale, even though it's ten time as funny, and twice as colourful.

Yeah, MTI was much more muppety. If they had gone with the original idea of Gonzo and Rizzo playing Jim and Hawkins it could have been down right perfect, though I do get why they didn't go that route.

I guess christmas gives people a reason to watch MCC. What we need is some kind of pirate holiday to peak interest in MTI.

Dang, that movie has some great comedy and music. How did we go from that to MFS? Brian Henson really needs to get back to directing Muppet movies.

Seriously, how is Steve Whitmire?
Now THAT is the question.

On the pirate holiday note, can we hijack Speak Like a Pirate Day and turn it into Watch MTI Day?

I'm surprised that the HUGE rise in Pirate Popularity didn't lead to a huge rise in MTI fans. Thanks Cap'in Jack.

Maybe. I've seen a number of Muppets to Pirate soundtrack, or visa versa trailers on YouTube, which is fun. Someone even made a shipping-video there with Kevin falling in love with Elisabeth Swan.

That, my friend, is what we're ALL still waiting eagerly to find out. One week later and we still know nothing. I mean, i can understand Disney being tightlipped on the reason behind a substitute performer, but the fact that NOBODY at Disney, Henson, any of Steve's colleagues has at least come out and told us on or off the record or anonymously if Steve is okay or not totally flabbergasts me. (I'm flabby enough, i don't need my gasts flabbered as well)
I'm just gonna come out and say it... I was the one that brought it up a while back... but I think, while we should care about Steve, we shouldn't speculate what could have happened to him until we get an indefinable answer. Sure, he could have taken ill, but he also could have just missed a flight or couldn't make it. I just don't want any of us fans to worry ourselves sick about it. That said, I really hope he's alright too.

but from what i've seen Steve doesn't seem to be visible in any of the Muppets Disneyland footage either. But then again that isn't Eric waggling Piggy/Fozzie either is it? Only person i recognised was Bill.
About that commercial... unlike the fact that this was a live performance, the muppeteers could easily dub their voices in later... somehow I wonder if they're even going to speak at all, since they could just have the footage be a montage set to music with a narrator.

Yes they could (and i guess thats cheaper for Disney) but usually they do use at least use most of the Muppeteers on shoots.

Is this whats going to happen, just use anyone to puppeteer and then throw the Muppeteers a few dollars to do a voiceover ... or have an AGT type thing going on. The same person had Piggy and Fozzie on ... he had grey hair under a cap? Unless Erics aged a bit in the last few years didn't look like him. It's great if they can develop new Muppeteer talent (and it seems thats maybe what Bill is doing possibly) but i just hope they are working with the usual Muppeteers not replacing them because they are cheaper or anything.

Saying that it looks like a fantastic shoot and the puppeteering looked very cool at least from what we can see. Congrats to everyone who worked on it.

I wonder if this latest push creates scheduling and budget conflicts? Maybe the freelance days of Muppeteering are over and they'll need to retain the services of Steve, Dave, Eric, Bill and the gang. Understudy fill-ins (no matter how well they're performed or dubbed) aren't sufficient for a quality Muppet branding.

I mean, who wasn't thrilled to see this Sesame picture on Tough Pigs? That sort of thing becomes meaningless with substitutions. It's not just the visual of the performers with the characters, it's the assurance of quality. The Muppet Show characters need this too. I'm still thinking of this latest appearance as an unintended misstep.
