It seems that for every successful SS character like Big Bird, Oscar, and Elmo, there are neglected ones like Placido Flamingo, Don Music, and of course Ruby. For those who don't know, Ruby was a yellow monster who appeared from 1988 to 1992, and was possibly written out of the show due to her failure with test audiences, along with her personality being severely underdeveloped thanks to the producers never getting a chance to build upon it due to her lack of screen time. I have had very vague memories of seeing her on the show as a child, but thanks to the Muppet Wiki, I finally remembered her!

Ruby was a very naïve and curious monster, and often conducted simple experiments to learn new things, which is a suitable way to encourage kids to learn stuff (so long as it isn't dangerous ). Another thing that set Ruby apart from other female characters was her implied tomboyishness, such as her singing about her love of trucks in the Monsterpiece Theater sketch "Guys and Dolls". If there's one thing SS needs, it's more characters who break free from gender stereotypes every once in a while.

I like the way Ruby looks with her long red hair and little red horns poking out underneath (and if there's one thing I love, it's characters w/ wild hair ). She may look plain, but sometimes simplicity is the best.

It's highly unlikely, but I'd love to see Ruby return to the show today (if it will still remain on the air), so long as her appearance and personality are kept intact (but it wouldn't hurt for the producers to develop the latter a little more like they have with characters such as Telly, Snuffy, Elmo, and Cookie Monster). If Camille Bonora is unable to perform Ruby again, maybe Leslie Cararra (Abby Cadabby) could do it. Ruby's voice shouldn't sound too different from Abby's, so I think she'd be able to do a fine job.

I've watched a few clips she appears in at sesamestreet.org, and on the clip pages her name isn't in the "featuring" section. I haven't actually done any searches for her on the wesboite, so maybe her name does appear in asearch.

On the website, the page with the clip "Good Morning, Morning" features her, but she isn't listed as one of the characters. However, that page does list Telly Monster TWICE!

It does, surprisingly enough!

And another thing: They show Aristotle, the blind monster, in the "characters" section (even though there are no clips with him in them), but not Ruby? What's going on here?
