I know that this is not the kind of topic that people oftyen like to discuss, but I think we should be reasonable about one thing. What is the point of living on this earth if we are going to dwell on the worst to come? Life just isn't worth it then, that's my only trhought for this thread.

Very true, you can't enjoy life if all you're doing is worrying and dreading. On the other hand, if we value life, we have a responsibility to prepare for the worst.

Well said. And I think that something else needs to be said here. Mankind has been trying to predict when the end of the world will approach, and there have been many false alarms in those periods.

For example, during the Y2K crisis, not only were people beginning to fear the "computer bug", but there were many religious groups (as well as cults) who believed that the year 2000 would be the second coming of Christ. But by the time the clock stuck midnight, nothing happened.

There are still many people who want to know when time will end for good, but I think that it needs to be clearly stated that we might never have enough answers to give us exact details, no matter how superior our technology gets. It may happen at some point in life, but humans such as ourselves just cannot have all the answers. We all have to be very resonable here.

On that final thought, I think that this dicussion should be closed down. I say that because since there are too many different opinions about the subject, it's just too much for people such as ourselves.

All I can say is, our government is very foolish and selfish not to give more funding to NASA. If anything does happen to the planet, at the moment there's no place else we can go.

My dad told me this evening that he saw an advertisement on television about some group that is "preparing" for 2012 by setting up these caves with supplies in them and holding a special lottery to determine who gets to live in the caves.

Here's why the Mayan calandar is such a big deal: according to my dad, the Mayan calandar isn't just a calendar like the Roman calendar (which we use today) or the Chinese calendar, both of which work in cycles. The Mayan calendar actually set out each year (I don't know the specifics), and so far every prediction that was made in this calendar has been incredibly accurate. However, the calendar abruptly cuts off at the year 2012, with no attempt of explaination. People (historians, scientists, and other big-wig types) took this to mean that time itself will stop and have been predicting 2012 as the end of the world for decades. The only reason it is suddenly a big deal is that it is now 2009 and supposedly we only have three years left on earth. I personally do not believe 2012 will be the end of the world, but if it is, I'm not going to worry about it. The end will come when the end comes and then I will be taken to be with my Savior.

I still say it's Boy who Cried Wolf. We keep hearing about the Apocalypse, and nothing happens... sooner or later something is going to happen, inevitably. By then, we'll have been trough so many false alarms we won't believe it and we won't be prepared. Do I think that 2012 is the end? Not really... but then again, with some of the leaders in this world, there is a reasonable hint of fear.

The time to have done that was back in the 1980's, when people in the 1950's thought we'd be living like the Jetsons. I agree... Nasa needs money, and the government cut their funding for obvious reasons I don't wanna go into. They have been extremely careful ever since the 2003 tragedy. Every time 2 oz. of foam insulation over the safe amount falls off of something during ignition, the mission gets scrubbed for a month.

Well, I'm not worried. Maybe the Mayan calendar ends in 2012 because that's as far as they felt like writing about (maybe they had a lazy calendar guy XD). And the world has been predicted to end at least once in the last decade, and we're still here! And I'm sure people in the past were like "The world will end in 1950, or 1980, or 1900 or whatever!"

I personally don't believe any of this "end of the world" stuff. I mean, wasn't the world supposed to have ended last month because of that eclipse.
