There is a new game coming out called Spore. The thing that really interests me in this game is not the actual game but the creature generator. You have the ability to completely design a creature in any shape or form and color.

Now for how this could impact us. This enables us all to have a quick and dirty 3d puppet creator. This could make all of our lives easier without having to redraw images we could use this game to completely resculpt the creature with a quick mouse click. I was doing a little searching around and I have seen a demo where they created a Carebear and stuff that looks like it is from the alien movie. So I'm sure with a little creativity this game could be a huge asset to all of us puppet builders.

What kind of game is it? Unless you can do something with the creatures, it ain't much of a game.

It's kinda like Sim City...you have to make an iviroment and interact with other characters you build. Go to there website or do a little investigating and you get the idea.

Spore has been getting a lot of buzz in the Machinima community ever since it was announced a couple years ago. I think where it will be really revolutionary is digital puppetry. Let's hope anyway!

I don't see how it'll affect puppetry very much. It's got a nice, easy to use 3d modeller, but there are a whole host of 3D apps that you can get -- many with free educational versions -- to accomplish the same thing, which would give you much more freedom.

Are you thinking that you'd use the designer in Spore to come up with quick 3D mockups of puppet designs to see how they'd work? You could download 3D Studio Max, or get any of the other 3D apps (with the free educational versions, like Softimage), and model it there. It might be a little less easy, but you'll be able to do as much as you'd like, and not have to by limited by whatever credits you might have at that point in the game to design your creature.

Machinima folks will doubtless make good use of it, but how would you use it for digital puppetry? Since you don't directly interact with the character, and certainly not to the extent you do with an actual puppet, that seems like it would be of limited value. Also, the game determines the movement automatically based on the structure of the character -- I don't think you can program in your own movement, and coming up with your own character for the creature seems most of the fun.

This is slightly off topic, but can anyone tell me who the female host on this clip is? She looks very familiar but I can't quite place her.
