Snowth, you would be surprised what school is like in other countries. In some places in the world, school is more that 5 days a week and lasts longer than 7 hours a day.

Well, although I agree that school for 6 days throughout the week is too much, (actually there's a lot about most formal education systems I disagree with), the idea of Saturday detention has been around for quite a while. Ever seen The Breakfast Club? It's a classic!
Haha yeah. They also did a version of that on Degrassi: The Next Generation, and I'm sure other shows have done it too.

Wait, since when have they been giving out U's? =/
They've been giving out Us for as long as I can remember, and if my memory serves correctly, I believe they starting using 'U' for "unsatisfactory" to be a little more polite than using 'F' for "failure".

Just so you know, that 7 hours/5 day a week thing? That's LIFE! I mean, that's the way that it is. You work on the days you have to and on the fricken weekend you do the stuff you couldn't do on the weekdays. PLUS, kids have more freedom because they don't have to worry about bills and stuff like that. So, it's pretty much the same thing as real life. This is why I feel bad for the president. No matter whether you like him or not, he's getting stuff blamed on him that has nothing to do with him. This article has no mention of him, so he shouldn't even be in the conversation. NOW, that being said, I feel that this was an unfortunate error because there were 16 people that were in trouble and not the whole school, so it's not like there was nobody that was supposed to be in school on Saturday. Some places are different than others in their detention policies. That's just the way it is.

Uh...heh, I'm sorry but this was kinda funny. Lol, I mean I'm sure it was horrible for the parents and kids at the time. But in retrospect, yeah, lol.

And yeah Saturday detentions aren't that unusual, my High School had them all the time (though I was never called to one hehe). Personally I don't mind the idea too much. If you can't do the time, don't do the crime. The rules aren't that unreasonable in most High Schools.

But I do agree about teachers being underappreciated and under paid. It truly is a crime.

I agree, I mean there are so many teachers out there doing this because they love doing it and not because it always pays enough, and you just can't put a price on knowledge at all because it's priceless. It could save a live and what's more precious or priceless then the gift of life?

By the way, I agree that it wasn't funny for the students and their parents at the time, but it is kind of funny when you think about it because it's just sounds so far fetched, you know?:stick_out_tongue:
