Download VideoLAN Player (aka VLC).

When you're playing your DVD, press pause, then go up to video, click "Snapshot", then it'll do just that.

You might want to edit them, though, when you're finished taking the pictures, because they're automatically saved as PNGs, and those are REALLY large, file-size. I recommend you resave them as JPGs.

It really works, too! Check out the screencap I got from a M*A*S*H DVD to make this avatar...

Another example...

I just now captured this one of Hawkeye and B.J. from the episode "Images".

Best Care Anywhere website used to have this one as a part of their photo gallery, but not anymore, so I screencapped it myself. I used to use it as a desktop wallpaper.

See how crystal clear the quality is? The problem is for some reason when a DVD is played on a computer, the contrast, and brightness is down quite a bit, so if you have PhotoShop, or Macromedia Fireworks (which I prefer), then you might want to brighten your pictures up a bit.

I found an easier way. Play a DVD and watch it (preferably on Windows Media center) and hit the "Print Screen" Button. then, go to paint or something and hit "copy." You may have to crop some stuff off, but you'll get a clean screen capture everytime.

Not only does this work with DVD's, it also works with Youtube videos and other things from websites.

Yeah, but there's two problems...

1. You need special codecs to play DVDs in Windows Media.

Now unless you have the codecs, then all you'll get when you put a disc in to watch on your computer, you're going to get a message pop-up saying you need to install the proper codec.

2. I BELIEVE you also need a special kind of software for doing the "Print Screen" thing with a video playing.

While I know that the "Print Screen" part is good for actually taking a screencap of what's being displayed on your computer, if you try to screencap a video that's being played on your computer, it'll just come up black when you open it in Paint (or whatever). At least that's the problem I've faced, and I think even Phillip said its because I needed special software to be able to capture the video.

EDIT: WHOA! What do you know? That "Print Screen" actually works on videos for me now! I guess I just couldn't do it on my older PC, but am able to on this fairly new HP I've been using for nearly a year now.

What the heck do I need VLC for, then? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Could be the problem. It works on newer computers, I guess.
Just don't play them in Windows media center. That's the only time it didn't work for me.

Well you can pause it and then take the picture. You can also do it while it plays but sometime it's not to good lookin' but so is the pause effect too. It sometimes comes out blury too.
