I've always heard people use the word to refer to all dogs in general. Sometimes in a not so affectionate context I'm afraid.

Thanks Marty! But I make a mistake in my part Eddie is not a mutt he is a labrador that is what Eddie is.

A Mutt generally means a mixed breed (apparently that's mainly an American and Canadian term, I didn't realize that!)

And yeah there is often a negative connotation to that. Like "it's just a Mutt!" Which I think isn't very nice. Though sometimes it can be used affectionally too!
